ACI (I) school sees IB students get perfect score

[p=14, null, left]SINGAPORE: Results of the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP) examination held in November 2011 were released on Friday.

ACS Independent said of its 454 students who sat for it, 29 obtained a perfect score of 45 points.

ACS Independent said the average score was 41.36.

Significantly, the percentage of students who obtained 40 or more points increased from 71.4 per cent in 2010, to 78.2 per cent in 2011.

Principal of ACS (Independent) Mr Winston Hodge said: "The students have worked hard, remained focused and were well motivated. Their success must be shared with their families.

"The school also has a strong culture of teacher care and support, with many teachers walking the extra mile for their students. A key success factor is the strong foundation that the students receive in their Years 1 to 4 programme, which encourages inquiry, creativity and innovation."

ACS Independent said the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP) is a demanding and challenging pre-university course of study.

Beyond completing courses and examinations in six subject areas, IBDP students are also required to complete three core requirements: the extended essay (EE), the theory of knowledge (TOK) course and developmental activities and community service, known as "Creativity, Action, Service".

The programme is highly regarded for its rigorous assessment, breadth of study and the depth of intellectual engagement.

For instance, the EE requires students to produce an independent piece of research, culminating in a 4,000 word paper.

Similar to an undergraduate research thesis, students investigate a research question of their interest.

The keystone of the IBDP programme is critical and analytical thinking.

In the TOK component, students examine the nature of knowledge issues across disciplines.

The 2011 IB cohort comprises 454 students and is the school's largest candidature to-date.

ACS (Independent) said it started the Integrated Programme (IP) in 2004 with the first batch of students sitting for the exam in 2007.

The 2011 cohort is the school's fifth.

當人教中一時, 他們教學生中二的知識

當人教中四, 他們教自己學生中五的知識

他們以大學一年班的知識, 去應付IB

又有多困難?

他們所謂教出的神童, 其實是考試機器

什麼都提早一年學, 或者在OLEVEL 時, 已經一些IB的知識

那麼讀上去便輕鬆

所以教出來學生, 可以大部份在40分之上

死谷, 是可以谷到

但氣氛上, 是否谷?

新加坡可以, 香港難

讀IB不能太死板

IB書教什麼, 你去學什麼, 必敗

原因是, 近三年IB 考試局已改變玩法

將題目活生生改變

特別是數學, 物理, 化學 HL 與SL

朋友女兒, 在某間國際學習讀物理

狂讀學校的書本., 差不多完成所有題目

再做NTK 的練習, 平時6分

但最近考試, 結果物理老師

把2008-2011年IB past paper在期末考試出

試試學生的反應 應變力

結果, 全班大部份人2-4分

主角的小女孩最後只有3分

她問老師為何會如此

老師的回答是她根本不熟

好多學生以為自己識,

未見過世面, 不知出面六/七的學生如何操練題目

我告訴她, 新加坡的IB學生,是操英國alevel的題目

而英國的alevel 再難一些的修改版本

新加坡的學者, 自己出了一套新加坡參考書藉

他們就是死操爛操

當她接過我那本書(我以前在step one買的)

她才知道, 自己太膚淺

原來新加坡人, 有特別自己的書狂操mc, long questions

且題目難度遠比IB 難

因為新加坡的ALEVEL ,不是UK那個

是故, 想去外國讀書, 用IB 較有保證 或UK 的ALEVEL

IB 的對手較本地新加坡學生弱

是故,得到好成績機會遠高於與本地學生爭

在新加坡, 讀IB, 之後去外國, 非富則貴

因為如果年紀不夠出國, 在服兵役前出國, 要給數十萬按金政府

逃兵役, 子女會被追究

父母也會被追究

雖然我對星架坡的教育冇乜興趣，都多謝你的努力。

我識不少星架坡人，他們對教育的怨氣也不少。

不知是不是香港讀IB的人少, 坊間要找到些可以對應的題目練習, 實在不可能, 除了學校課本外, 就只能做PAST PAPER, 題目做的少, 自然分數拉不高, 新加坡的配套那麼強, 難怪分數會高人一等, 有時想想考試不是求分數, 明白道理最重要, 但站在大學門檻前, 多一分就多機會, 如果有一樣配套, 大多數的人是不會放棄那一分的

But then there are people who think 死谷 is a wrong approach.

It said "....孩子智力被過度開發並不是一件好事情，因為必須給孩子的大腦留下想象空間。過多的知識會使孩子的大腦變成了計算機的硬盤，常此下去，孩子的大腦就慢慢地變成了儲存器，不會主動思考了..."

Interestingly, the mission statement of IB also says "the International Baccalaureate aims to develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect."

A lot of the HK schools also use the 死谷 approach.  We can judge for ourselves whether our students have too become 儲存器，不會主動思考及發問, 欠缺追求知識及答案的熱誠, 缺乏想象力.

I find quite a lot of "不會主動思考及發問, 欠缺追求知識及答案的熱誠, 缺乏想象力" young colleagues in the office.

Well, at least you get lots of RAM (記憶體).  Sorry, just kidding. No disrespect to your colleagues.

Your RAM is old and, I am sorry to say, out of fashion.  Theirs are more advanced and they are programmed to take care of their social and leisure activities before anything else.  You should count yourself lucky as they've still got some space left for work.

死操爛操，不如考慮其他試重唔駛咁辛苦。

我幫阿仔買了多過一本課本，讓他了解不同題目內容。還有在IB store買了一兩本有關答題的方法，阿仔看完更了解不同題目的答題深度及闊度，IB Prepared:

要先 define 甚麼是死谷。

"死谷"對我嚟講係明顯超乎正常及合理的學習及練習, 例如當你在學校讀中一時, 你的學校教緊你D中二或中三的material.  又或者你的父母安排你在校外學習中二或中三的material, 目的係令你讀得比人快及深.  又例如 "日以繼夜 夜以繼日" 咁不停做操練, 我覺得都算係死谷.  當然每個小朋友都唔同, 有D做一個鐘操練就死, 有D做24個鐘操練都未死.  但當好多家長及小朋友都投訴讀得好辛苦, 就好明顯有問題.

朋友仔仔去年九月升小一，大部分同學仔都會背乘數表，佢個仔仲數緊手指，佢嚇到儍咗，我聽到0咗咀
