Piano Grade 3 exam - Need advice

My kid has started piano lessons 9 months ago, and she is now upto:
- Beyer (song no.47)
- Thompson Book2 P.34
- BACH book 1 (just started)
- can play C, D, G scales

The piano teacher said she is upto Grade 2 now, and she suggests my kid can take Grade 3 exam this year (period between August and November). I am a little doubt if she will be upto grade 3 because It's only 6-7 months from now,  do u think it is too rush? Will my kid skip a lot of other songs if she is preparing for her exam. Any one has experience, pls advise? Is it a normal progress?

如果你都有hesitate，何不考grade 2輕鬆一點?
cdg scales 全不是grade 3 要考的

I don't want her to take Grade 1 or 2 exam, as it takes time when preparing exam, I plan for her to take only grade 3, grade 5 and grade 8 exams in the future. I'm just not sure if she should take Grade 3 exam this year as suggested by her teacher. I know C, D, G scales are not enough, but her teacher said she will pick up the necessary songs/syllabus when preparing for Grade 3 exam in the coming months.  I just want to see if any one here has this similar experience as my kid, and if it is OK to take grade 3 exam.

你小朋友幾大?
4月初先截止報名，趁呢個時間試試佢是否能handle 考試曲目同scales 都仲來得切
我就覺得如小朋友仍未去到grade 3的level，但距離考試仲有大半年，誰能保證呢個幾個佢"一定"能跟上進度?

She is 6.5 yrs old. Yes, April is the dealine for application, I haven't applied for the exam yet as I want to hear other's opinion and experience. Thx for your reply.

我決定兒子考grade 3時，他已彈完所有grade 3的scales(3月)，報了8月份考試，到考的時候他把grade 5的scales 也彈完了，所以考琴試對他來說沒太大負擔

3級其實係考什麼, 可否告知詳細資料, 囡囡準備今年8月考3級 (2年級), 但好似只練3首歌 (已揀), 不知有沒有講或教考試的東西了, 另如何考取高分或沒有那麼緊張.

Thx for your reply. As a piano teacher, you also think it's a rush.  I really wonder  why my girl's piano teacher has this suggestion??? She told me that it's very common nowadays when I asked her last time....Is there any other reasons behind?

如果準備充足，小朋友應付有余，應該不會太緊張吧?
我兒考前3個月我才跟他彈考試的曲目，就是不想花太多時間在考試上
恆常的進度更為重要哦

唔..咁又唔駛諗得咁複雜o既，其實如果你有hesitate，就同老師開心見誠講囉，下年4月才考都唔遲

Agree marcuscyrus's approach - practice the scales first, because you need to memorize them.
Why not try the exam next Apr. Then you have one year to prepare for.

不建議你女兒今年考3級, 因為:

Grade 3 Syllabus : http://www.abrsm.org/regions/fil ... buses/piano0311.pdf 出年又改, 如今年Fail了可能要改歌仔, 從頭來過。

又, 現時(end in 2012)的Grade3內容對6歲小孩子比較難, 因為考試歌曲的感情部分可能小朋友好難明。

仲有, sight-reading對只學了一年的小朋友是另一死穴, 這是要用時間浸出來的, 佔成廿分架。

有把握D, 先考2級, 作為階段性成績, 過兩/年直接考5級, 對大家都好。

有小數老師會鼓勵你考高D, 因為學3級已經收定3級學費, 你Fail左佢都唔會回水。

我一般會同初學的父母討論一個「學習計劃」, 因為很人都沒有想過幾時學甚麼考甚麼的, 我的建議是:

1. K3/P1開始學。
2. 3年級考grade3, 成功後, 此時可討論是否多學另一種樂器。
3. 最遲5年級尾(4-5月)或六年級頭(8-11月)考grade5, 因為考中學有用。
4. 小學畢業前考埋Grade5樂理。
5. 期間當然繼續學, 但升中後半年, 因應學業及其他活動程況(小學升中症候群), 決定是否進一步學音樂, 還是當興趣玩玩算了。
6. 如繼續, 目標是升高中前考grade8。
7. 如有意入大學音樂系, 畢業前的目標是grade8樂理和演奏級文憑。

雖然有很多家長不認同這個計劃, 認為大慢了。不過希望大家明白, 每個人一天都只有24小時, 一定要平衡發展, 不要把學音樂變成苦差。

還有, 不要心存僥倖, 考試成功與否與投入時間掛勾, 任何人(尤其小朋友)fail了都不好受。

My girl spends 1 hr or sometimes more on piano every day. Maybe that's why her teacher might think that she can catch up very quickly. I also worry that once she has signed up for Grade 3 exam, she will spend much longer time on piano every day just for the exam songs but at the same time skip many other songs.

Her teacher is a private tutor, she told me it's common nowadays to 'jump' like this plus she thinks my girl is willing to spend time (1 hr) practising piano every day...... BTW, what is the difference between private tutor and music centre?
