Copy from KCIS News, I think their Chinese standard is very high, even a foreigner also won chinese speech.
Yet another good result from the Speech Festival, Chinese speech.
Our congratulations to Tom Bradley, P5N. who has won third place in the Chinese speaking competition at the Hong Kong Speech Festival.
Yet another good result.  And many of our students have been awarded a merit certificate for their performances.  Our congrats to them as well!

KCIS Chinese program is equivalent to local school. Students in KCIS are required to do a lot of Chinese dictations, reading reports. That's one of the reasons why I put my kids in the school.

According to the KCS group newsletter, KCIS academic achievements have also improved a lot in 2011 with 19% in A* grade and 25% in A grade. Many students took Chinese and Maths a year earlier than normal. This set of results is very good. I guess that almost all of these students did not study in KCIS since P1. If more KCIS primary students stay, the results will be significantly much better.

Can anyone kindly tell me if KCIS is easier for HK local kids to get in? I know that ESF has a clear distinction in nationalities or home languages as Cat 1 and 2. Is this the case at KCIS as well?

KCIS looks only at the English skills of the candidates, not the nationalities. That said, the percentage of locals (hk nationals) must be lower than certain level in accordance with its school license .

Thank you, Littleho.  But  'candicates' you mean are children? or parents? I just wonder, an interview to such small kids can involve very simple English such as colours and shapes (as you showed the interview contents earlier in this thread) which even local nurseries teach. Or their main concern goes to the previous/current kinder?

Being accepted by KCIS is not easier than ESF.

I experienced both and got admission offers.

During ESF kinder’s interview, kids are required to response to simple question verbally or physically.  When ESF kinder invites you to join the play visit, it means spot is available for you and you are likely to be accepted if none of unexpected happens during the play visit.  It’s a lottery without solid test but categorization discriminates Cantonese speaking children only.

KCIS requests more nowadays.  Not all interviewees could get offer.  I think KCIS places importance on the ability of using English and the personality of child and parents.  Though KCIS doesn’t lift the barrier for Cantonese speaking children, it doesn’t mean local kids still have better opportunities if kids are not up to par.

In my daughter’s class (K/KCIS), there are local kids are able to speak fluent English with nice accent and Cantonese and Mandarin as well.  I quite admire them for their linguistic ability.  That’s what KCIS is looking for.

If you worry that KCIS program is relaxed, you should rather worry that one cannot cope with the progra. KCIS is one of top three international schools with most homeworks and projects . The other two are GSIS and CIS . Students who have gone through KCIS primary have very good standard. Admission offices of top notch international schools know KCIS well

Appreciate such details, Arcana and Littleho.

I even more got to like KCIS after reading your comments!  I just gave up applying for ESF since my son understands three languages including Cantonese at this moment.

I will go to apply for KCIS right after this holiday!

回復 littleroundface 的帖子

Last year, 4 students from Kindergarten Class (ie K1) left KCIS. Due to overwhelming demand, the school added 8 more slots (2 additional slots per class). Hence, the available spaces last year were 12. I do not know the situation for this year nor next year. I have discussed with other KCIS parents. They said the admission KCIS primary is now getting very hard. If I were you, I would apply for more schools as backup. CIS and SIS starts admitting students from K2 onwards.
