I know a lot of kids in HK are doing CTY, EPGY and other gifted programs (either online or as a summer course).   leeamy in another post has been telling us about his boy's experience in doing CTY Mat ...

Hi Shoeshine,
For CTY programs, most of the courses are self-paced, except some AP courses, and language courses. However, I was told that the writing course (most probably the one you are interested "crafting the essay") is also self paced, with a tutor help.
For all the courses in EPGY (thru infokids), they are either classroom courses, or a course through the internet with a teacher. If you are to enroll an English/Writing course, Infokids will send you a software to be installed onto your computer at home, then you have to logon at a particular time each week, and your teacher will be there to do the course.
I know it because my son also enrolled in the EPGY's(infokids) writing course for 1.5 years. However, the time for the class will most probably be at night, and your classmates are all over the world.
Since there is a teacher in EPGY's writing course, I would recommend EPGY's writing course over CTY's crafting the essay.

how to apply for such courses?

It depends on which course you are referring to. If you are talking about EPGY through infokids, then just go onto their wbsite www.infokids.com.hk and see if any of the courses really interest your child. Then call them up and ask what to do for an application. Actually you can download an application from their website, fill it out, and send back the application with your child's academic report. If you are applying for English writing, you have to submit 2 English graded compositions of your child's within the last 6 months.
If you are applying for mathematics, only submit the academic report with the application form. Need also a cheque for the assessment. I forgot how much it is already, I think it's $280. Then if everything is ok, that means, if your child's standard means their standard, then you will get a call telling you when to bring your child for an assessment.
During the same time of the assessment, be sure to sit in the parents' info section. Mr Tsui of the center (infokids) will tell you info of the EPGY program (from Stanford U.) and many more and what your child can do to keep up and so on.
They have classroom courses for Math and IML courses. (IML courses are English but at a lower grade). As for the upper grade English courses, the class will be held on the internet every week. You cannot see the teacher but you can hear her, and before the seesion, infokids will send you a software to be installed onto your computer. This software enables you to log into the classroom for the class.
My son got into the IML courses, and the English courses. I forgot about the IML courses, but each grade of the English writing course runs for 1 year, and each of the individual course from each grade runs about 3 months, so the first of the semester is from Sept to Dec, the second runs from Jan to March, and the last runs from April to Jun.
As for the CTY program from Johns Hopkins U., go to this website:http://cty.jhu.edu/ and also read info and see if there are courses that interest your child. For CTY courses, unless it is a language course, or some AP courses, they are mostly self-paced courses. That means you set your own timetable, no teacher is around. But there is a tutor for you to ask questions if you have any. For any child in primary school, I recommend that the parent (mother or father) has to be there for him/her for the first few sessions, to guide him/her through, and to translate for him/her when needed. Be sure to sit with him/her for the tutorial session also.
For applying CTY courses, simply send an email to them to ask for an assessment. You will have to find a proctor (to guide thru the test) and a test center, then they will send the assessment material to where you have specified.
Hope this helps.

Hi, I can share my boy's experience. He attended both the CTY on-line English Critical Reading course as well as the Science and Engineering Course in the summer school this year. He absolutely loves the summer school, he finds the content interesting and challenging and the other kids great to get along. The on-line English course is actually at fixed schedule, the kids have to read 3 books for the 10 week course and every week, there are fixed topics that they have to write about in a forum setting, sharing with other fellow course students and the instructor will prompt thier thinking as well as review thier writing. My son seems ok with it but not especially excited by it. I find that it is not challenging enough for him. Anyway, both are good experience as far as I am concerend.
