I vaguely remember there was some discussion about CTY's summer program available in HK, in HKUST? Please advise if any mammies here have the idea.
Or, please advise if there's any equivalent summer program available in HK?

My son is doing EPGY math and I would like to enroll him in a Math camp in HK this summer. May only consider the EPGY camp in the US next year.

Thanks
Ruby

My son has just been accepted and will do the CRYPTOLOGY (Maths) this year.  What kind of information do you need?

Actually you can go to the John Hopkins website and find the information about the summer school in HK.

Read from their website, they accept Grade 5/10 years old or above.

Thank you for your information.
I surfed their site and found a lot of information : )
Which grade is your son going to join? Seems that Cryptology is only part of their Math course ?
Would you son be commuting or stay overnight in the camp?
I am afraid it might be too late for us to apply as my son has never taken any SAT/SCAT/WCT. Not sure if we can still have enough time to take the test, wait for result and apply for the camp?

Thanks a lot!

My son is also joining thier summer program this year :D . he is going to take the G5 Science and Engineering course. I think they still accept applications if the course is not full yet, but of course you need to take and pass the SCAT or WCT first, I am not sure what is the testing schedule for the rest of the year, you may need to email them and ask them.

Hi Ruby1219

You may get the information from the other parent.

My son is now in G7 and he will be COMMUTER AT RESIDENTIAL.

Last year, my son took the SCAT exam at the HK Examination Authority.  They have different date for your to choose.  The result is within 3-4 weeks.  You can check with HK Examination Authority and also CTY to see if you still can make it.

For enquiry, you can send an e-mail to [email protected] or [email protected].  They will let you know whether it is too late to take the SCAT or SAT exam.

SCAT tesst your quantative (maths) and verbal (english) and if you passed the mark, you can choose both science and langauge courses in thier summer program and also distant learning programs.
WCT tests only mathematics ability, and hence only qualifies the child to science courses, also I think WCT scores only qualify the child to summer school in Hong Kong, not thier distant learning programs.

Ok thanks so much!

Where can I take the SCAT? And, what's the difference between SAT and SCAT? Pardon my ignorance.

My son took the SCAT at HKUST, I think it was a special testing session organised by CTY last year. I am not sure whether they have regular schedule for the tests in HKG. again you may need to check thier website or send them an email. SCAT is the test they used for grades 2-6 students, and they use SAT and ACT for grades 7-8 students. But i heard they are piloting a SCAT version for grades 7-8 students recently. the main difference between the 2 tests are the length of the test, I think. I remember the SCAT is about 1 hour in total, but I heard the SAT takes 3 hours.

Here is some more information about the SCAT & SAT/ACT Tests:

For 7th and 8th Graders--

SCAT testing now offered for CTY Summer

Programs and CTYOnline course eligibility

BackgroundA form of this test has been used for
many years as the eligibility test into CTY
academic summer and online course for students
in the 2nd-6th grades. Seventh and eighth grade
students will take the Advanced form of the test.
Highlights
  • The Advanced SCAT test is shorter (under an
hour), compared to the SAT or the ACT (3-4
       hours).
  • The Advanced SCAT testing is a fast-track
option for students and families interested in
qualifying for CTY programs without taking the
      SAT or the ACT.
  • The Advanced SCAT is offered on a computer
at your nearest Prometric test center. Instead
of waiting for a specific test day, as required
for the SAT or ACT, you can schedule the test
at a time convenient for your child and you.

"What test should my child take?"Click for a
comparison chart of SCAT, ACT and SAT tests

  • Although the Advanced SCAT is a shorter test
than the SAT or the ACT, it's not easier to
qualify for CTY's programs on the Advanced
SCAT than it is on the SAT or ACT.
  • SAT and ACT tests are more well known, and
scores from them may carry more weight
with schools, if your aim is to use this test
data to help your child's school understand
your child's math or verbal abilities.
  • Taking the SAT or ACT lets your child get an
early look at these tests in a low stakes
environment (since scores earned in 7th
and 8th grade are not saved for future
reporting). This practice can help improve
performance later on when your child takes
        them for college admissions.

How do I participate? For students who have
already enrolled in 2010-2011 CTY Talent
Search:

“Advanced SCAT Pilot” test registration email.
  • A email will be sent within 5 days containing
your child's eligibility number for taking the
Advanced SCAT and a web link to instructions
for scheduling your child's test with Prometric.
  • Contact Prometric using the toll-free number
or website listed in test registration information
to schedule an appointment to take the
      SCAT test on computer.
  • Pay SCAT test fee of $55.00 when scheduling

For students who have NOT already enrolled in
the CTY Talent Search:

3, check the box that states, "I would like to
participate in the Advanced SCAT Pilot for 7th
     and 8th graders."
  • A email will be sent within 5 days of registering
with the CTY Talent Search. This email will
contain your child's eligibility number for taking
the Advanced SCAT and a web link to
instructions for scheduling your child's test
      with Prometric.
  • Contact Prometric using the toll-free number
or website listed in test registration information
to schedule an appointment to take the SCAT
      test on computer.
  • Pay SCAT test fee of $55.00 when scheduling

My son will take the SCAT on next Thu. Hope it would be in time to enroll him in the HKUST CTY Math camp this year!
Any mummies sending your kid(s) there ?
As my son is in Year 6/Grade 5, he would have to commute to the day camp everyday right? How should I arrange the transportation? We live in Island side, it would be time and cost consuming for me to drive him back and forth everyday : (

My son had taken and passed the SCAT to qualify for the Math course. I tried to enroll him online but found that there were only four courses available. One is writing which is irrelevant. The others are "Inductive & Deductive Reasoning", "Introduction to Robotics" and "Science & Engineering".
I'm wondering which one should I enroll him in if his interest is Math? And, it shows "session 2" in all the courses, what does that mean?

I sent emails to them (US and HK addresses) but did not get any feedback!! Very frustrating. Their response was always very slow and not answering my questions at all!

Any mammies here can help? Thank you very much.

Ruby

Hi Baoma,

After further investigation and discussion, my son now inclines to choose Science & Engineering course, and he's also in G5! If finally we confirm to go for this course, he might become classmates of your son!  : )

Can you please share why you/your son chose Science & Engineering?
After reviewing the course description and the sample textbooks, my son said the Inductive & Deductive Reasoning course seems a bit too simple and easy. He's more interested in Science & Engineering. But then, he found the course description and sample textbook a bit challenging. Also, in the CTY website it says the kid should have taken their Inductive & Deductive Reasoning course or has solid pre-algebra knowledge in order to take this course. My son never took their Inductive & Deductive Reasoning course, but he is taking Grade 8/pre-algebra online math course by EPGY and almost finished. So, I am not sure if he's equipped and qualified to take the Science & Engineering course.
Can you share your viewpoints with me?

Thanks a lot
Ruby

Hi Ruby 1219,

My son chose the Science and Engineering Course purely based on interest, he does not like "pure" maths so much.... he also did not take their maths course before and I think it is good that the course is a bit challenging for the kids, that way they can learn and hopefully find it fun.
