Yes, I think Magic Tree House is quite good for young kids.  My daughter (currently K2, just reached 5 years old) started reading #1 a couple of weeks ago and she loved it so much.  She can finish a book within an hour if she is concentrated on it.   I have now bought many of this series for her.  Commercial Press sells at $100 for 4 books.  A good bargain I think.

My experience is to find a series of chapter book that you think your child likes.  Arouse his/her interest by reading the first book with him/her, stop at the last chapter or some important scence and leave the book on the table.  Once start, and they know that they can read by themselves, then no one can stop them from reading.
some tips
1.  you must read the book yourself first.
2.  borrow from library may not be a good start because they like to read the same few books again and again.  
3.  you can even colour the illustration with them.

My boy went thru these books when he was Y1. (about 5 yrs old)
1) ORT/ OST series
2) Frog and Toad series (by Arnold Lobel)
3) Young Cam Jansen series
4) Ready-to-read level 3
5) Bailey School Kids series (Jr. Chapter Book)
6) Cam Jansen series
7) The Black Lagoon series
8) Tree Tops series
9) Magic School Bus series

All these books led him step by step to fun reading and this year, he reads just like a bookworm.

In Year Two, he reads:
1) Magic Tree House series (especially the merlin mission series)
2) Geronimo series
3) Captain Underpants series
4) Wimpy Kids series
5) Roald Dahl series
6) The series of "WHO WAS..."
7) Little Nose series

I love 'the pain and the great one' series and Usborne young reading series one. I would like to but versions +CD, any lower price channel?

If I borrow from library, do they have CD as well?

Usborne young reading is very well written.  This series is the only books she read with fairy and princess, well, excep NG kids infopedia

Dear Radiomama,

My 5-year-old boy also likes Magic School Bus and Geronimo Stilton and can read them by himself.  

For Roald Dahl series, he managed to read through The Enormous Crocodile and later the Magic Finger also by himself, because he found the stories are very interesting.  However for the rest of Roald Dahl books which are relatively wordy with few pictures (and small font size), he doesn't seem to readily give it a try (not even when I try to read with him).  Could you share how you motivate your son to read RD's and/or other books?

I read some rather "long" chapter books as  bedtime story to my boy, then he would eager to read it by himself.  
Books by Judy Blume (without illustration) around 200 pages are good choice too!
However, don't push!  Let him enjoy his own reading.

Thanks for the prompt response.  I see, and I believe if the story is attractive (even without pictures/illustrations) youngsters at this age would love it and read by themselves as you said.  Let me google Judy Blume later.  Thanks again!

just received Horrible Science of Everything, highly recommended for boys and girls in P.1 or above.  it's so funny, especially if your boy and girl like talking about poo and wee and jokes, that's a perfect match.  As a matter of fact, I enjoyed reading the book too.  looking forward to the Horrible science box set (20 books)
