bonbonzhu,

The good thing for TOBS is that it provides a chance for regular revision of the 2-3 chapters of Maths taught every week or every other week.

If we can do revision with our children regularly following TOBS’ timetable, we don’t need to do revision of all chapters taught at one time just before the term test/examination.

Also, as you mentioned, after looking at the results of each TOBS, we should know what chapters our children are weak at and spend more time/efforts in catching up.

1429 : TOBS is the weekly Maths Test On Basic Knowledge.

Principal : That's right Principal. This time we could really feel the benefit of having TOBs every week. It became so easy for both of us when we did the revision in the past 2 days. She even had time to go to the playground.

1429,

I believe there is TOBS for P2-P6 pupils.

Cannot recall whether there is TOBS for P1 pupils or not.

Hi 1429,

The TOBS normally starts in the 2nd term of P1.

BTW, I think TOBS is really a good scheme for both of us and kids...

bonbonzhu,
A very good story for sharing.

Sometimes, we may want to buy small gifts for our children as encouragement after they have spent efforts in their studies.
The small gifts may not necessarily to be expensive items.
As you said, a pack of ready-to-eat noodle that costs only HK$2-3.- is already a good token of their achievements.
The important point is that they have to work hard first and then obtain something, no matter what the results are.

For P1 parents & pupils, please don’t feel too upset about the results of the first term test.
Some pupils are still not too familiar with the format of tests/examinations yet and it takes some time for them to adapt to it.
Things will improve over time.

My child also eats Mami noodles sometimes.
Your story reminds me to buy some stock and keep it at home just in case ....................

Also, I guess the sales of Mami noodles in HK will be up by at least 30% in the coming few weeks.
Very likely, they will be out of stock at TSL’s tuck shop on next Monday .......................

principal,

Strongly agree that the reward should be based on the effort rather than the result.   I would like to stress that effort should include the pre-test effort and in-process effort.

I asked her if she had enough time to complete the test.  She said yes and went back for proof reading.  She said she then took a nap  !!!     I guess I forgot to tell her to make full use of test/exam time when she asked me what a test is few days before the test. (BTW, I told her a test is a worksheet to be completed within limited time)  Anyway, we are still convinced she did put a lot of effort so a present was given to her.

yypapa,

Yes, I always ask my child to spend adequate efforts in doing things.
If the outcome is good, it’s bonus.

Don’t take it for granted that one must get good results even though one has try the utmost.
Luck does play the most critical role in every success.

Sometimes, even though one fails after spending the greatest efforts, one still gains something.
Our children need to understand that it’s a learning process.
They need to learn how to face both success and failure.
The earlier they know how to face failure, the more mature they will become and thereby, laying a solid foundation for their future growth.

For any tests and examinations, I notice that careless mistakes are very common among our children, not only for P1-P2 pupils, but also for pupils of senior grades.
If they are careful enough every time, some marks need not to be deducted.
Therefore, please suggest your child to make good use of the remaining time during tests/examinations to double check all the questions and answers as much as possible.

Your case is very touching. Not only my daughter is learing, but also I have to tune my mindset not to give too much pressure on her.
