It depends how do the terms and conditions state.
Usually there will be a time bar and you cannot redeem the debenture before the date specified. Sometimes, part (or even whole) of the debenture may become contributory fund to school when it is mature.
If it is a great concern for you on school selection. you'd better call the school and get certain of this. I'm not sure if the school office is helpful (or smart) enough to answer you the question becuse not many parents are keen on asking this.
