Below is some info which may give us some insight:
I guess we can talking about the discretionary stage:
YWGS's rating is: 50% academic result, 30% interview, 10% conduct and 10% extra-curricular activities (no need to prepare any profolio or any referral letter, self-introducing letter, etc. they only collect the application form and transcript)
http://www.chsc.hk/secondary/tc/print/school_1016.pdf
while SSGC's rating is: 60% academic result, 30% interview and 10% extra-curricular activities
http://www.chsc.hk/secondary/tc/print/school_1015.pdf
Pls kindly note that SSGS has a feeder primary school. From the figures in 2009, SSGS reserved 105 places for its feeder school in the central allocation stage.
http://www.edb.gov.hk/FileManager/TC/Content_1582/ssl-hk1(cw)-2009.pdf
Taking into account the 7 seats for students not coming from the feeder primary, the place available for central allocation was 112. Thus, the total no. of seat was estimated to be 140. In other words, the 20% discretionary stage places ~ to 28 seats.
As the school can reserve 85% seats for feeder primary during the central allocation, no. of students in primary in that yr was estimated to be ~124.
If the school would take the opportunity to make use of the discretionary stage to recruit more students from its feeder primary, the remaining seats for students from other schools would be (28 - (124-105))= 9! [of course it all depends on if the primary session has any band 3 kids (if any, the no.). assuming they had all band 1-2 kids, it is understandable that the secondary session can make use of the discretionary stage to recruit the band 1 top kids from the primary. as long as the kids in the feeder primary put the seconday session in the first choice in central allocation stage, and they are in band 1-2, under the feeder arrangement, the secondary school has to take them up (up to the limit of 105 seats for the case in 2009.)
Likewise for SH and MM, both have a feeder primary.
So, for those secondary schools with feeder primary sessions, while we should NOT choose them in the central allocation stage, it may be better if we can have some idea on:
1) the school's policy: whether they will make use of the discretionary stage so that all band1-2 students from their feeder primary can enter the secondary? or they will make use of the DS to recruit some v. bright students from other sources?
2) the rating: if the school is concerned about the extra-curricular activities (if not, they may make use of the DS to have some kids with "special talent" (e.g. HY likes recruiting kids for sports)
3) the standard of the feeder primary: if the feeder primary has some band 3 kids, there will be more seat "available" for the DS (even if the school's policy is to intake as many as "eligible" students from its feeder primary).
If talking about the 5 schools asked by CFaHB, we may need to find out the above for the three schools with feeder session.
For ref, BPS's rating is: 40% academic, 40% interview and 20% extra-curricular. http://www.chsc.hk/secondary/tc/print/school_1035.pdf While it seems that BPS has a rather high % on interview, we may also need to figure out if BPS has any "reserved seats" for kids with "special talents".
Not sure if BPS will interview all applicants, I just know that it's a practice for YWGS to have interview of all applicants. |
