There is really no "average". Every student has their own pace, started at different age, puts in different effort and time and different methods from teachers....

However, if you want to AIM, what would be a reasonable level for a Primary 6 student, would be ABRSM Grade 6... but this is really just general.

I have all sorts of grades from Primary 6 and up... some secondary school still playing Grade 3, or 4... alot are playing Grade 8 by 12 years old.... study Diploma for 1.5-2 years.... graduate by 15 years old....

So, it depends on the child.
Why do you ask anyways? Is there something you can do to change what grade your child has achieved?

A student will proceed to Diploma after G. 8. Do you mean ABRSM or Trinity exam? After Diploma, what will be the next stage before 'graduate by 15 years old'

Learning Music is endless, the student has many choices, they can continue to take other exams to keep up their goals orientation, such as ABRSM, TRINITY, AMEB, some of mine go to back to Canada to take RCM, and many just continue to compete in competitions, and work on LRSM, and also play pieces like Concertos, and more pieces that are NOT in the examination syllabus.

A bunch do stop after the Dip exam because of school academic workload.
So, the options are endless.
Also, a bunch of them will continue to concentrate on their 2nd instrument like violin, flute, cello, harp...

我個囝間琴行有個小妹妹,10歲時已經考到ATCL - Distinction, 11 歲考上海音樂學院10級 - Distinction, 同年歲pass 埋LTCL, 今年12歲已經報咗年尾FTCL考試!重要同時應付升中及其他興趣class,佢好似由6-7歲先學琴呢!真係好叻囡!

所以我個人覺得最緊要自己個小朋友鍾意學就o.k.同埋肯用心練習, 幾多級反而唔重要!

yes, agree. I have an 8 year old who finished Violin at ATCL with high marks in distinction.

Then there are many students who NEVER get around to completing the diploma.

No comparisons. Just enjoy the path of learning music and loving music!
