my speech teacher explained the market in last month seminar with us, that parents

1. prefer Eng poem to story because they thought the poems are shorter and requires fewer lessons, in fact Eng story (prose) is the category which learns the most, but parents seldom willing to ask their kids to take part

2. prefer PTH poem to Cantonese one because they thought learning more PTH words and tone, in fact many kids learn words by sounds no matter of language even you give them Japanese or Italian as seen in music would give you similar "return", actually Cantonese marking strategy is somehow harder than PTH in view of sound accuracy

3. prefer Chinese poem to story (prose) because of the similar reasons in English counterpart

4. prefer non-open to open because they are afraid of native speakers, in fact native speakers have similar pronunciation flaws just as HK Chinese kids present their Cantonese materials, with sufficient and diligent training, the technical difference is not that much as thought, it has been an increasing trend that many winning kids in urban non-open classes are taught by specialists or centres, unless the talented kids are learning v hard with their school teachers


So, the optimum combination should be well-consulted with your school teacher or language specialist, every student schedule, technical needs and competition topic match are not the same. Some students can only accomodate 1 poem, some can try other categories for other learning purpose not just for getting placing.

My teacher said, each year, less than half of parents make their competition class choice "correct", even the parents who are teachers do not often make optimum decisions. This could make the training longer than supposed and eventually paid by parents.

There are much more categories other than verse and prose for experienced children and parents, in both Chinese and English.

A note for those mums who asked my teacher for speech festival enrollment.

If all data transmission and fee payment are FULLY completed by 10/9 Thu midnight, you will receive a duplicate entry form (w competition materials if not received earlier) for data check on 14/9 Mon by post.

It is very very very important that you check your mailbox to prevent any entry got missing or data typo. Call my teacher direct before 16/9 if you did not receive any by then.

(Sorry I can't post teacher contact here according to bk rule)

I looked at the syllabus just as you can read from the organizer website

Class 512 is S.3/4 choral speaking boys, both poems are to be spoken in Canontese

don't worry, choral speaking in each school is trained under a very experienced teacher, your teacher will take care of it

Cantonese is more difficult in PTH in terms of speech, this is what my kids' teacher often says
