Pui Ching is a through train school, so no matter what result of their student in Pui Ching Primary will go to Pui Ching Secondary. So they have all kinds of student, Band 1, Band 2 or even Band 3.

培正好多人話佢係Band 1 尾，因為佢係中中，但培正係全港中學排行榜排17位，我會覺得佢應該係Band 1頭，而且培中的英文水平, 一點也不比英中遜色。

I don't think so, cos PCMS (培中) only have 205 places available for total 320 PCPS (培小) students. Hence, there is no chance for Band 3 students to enter PCMS through  Lucky Draw.

首先謝謝你們的回應.

我之所以問這個問題, 是因為小女9月份將升讀小一, 已被培小錄取(她並非培幼生). 另外,她在自行收生階段亦入了土瓜灣的馬頭涌官小. 6月份就快到了, 我們必須做個決定, 是入讀口碑不錯的官小呢, 還是每個月要繳交將近3000大元學費的培小? 所以才會聯想到培中的定位在哪裡, 值得我們投資在小學裡嗎? 真是不知怎樣取捨. (兩間都離家不遠, 馬小則步行就可到).

小兒是由培幼開始讀上, 而家囝囝讀中一，我自己當然覺得好值得啦，阿仔升上中學, 同小學同學一起升, 不知讀得幾開心。而且培中校風都真係好好。

我知道有個小朋友係讀馬頭涌, 同阿囝同一屆, 在校內係Band 1成績(全級約考70)，派位去左鄧鏡波中學。所以他的次子, 都不再升讀馬頭涌，轉讀培小。今年升小一。

每個月要繳交將近3000大元學費的培小，真是一個幾關鍵的問題。而且妳好像是有2個小朋友。一起讀私立小學的話都要想清楚。

但若能力許可則可考慮，私立小學一定有他的長處, 否則那會有人寧交學費也要去讀，看看每年投考培幼培小的申請數字便知。

我在培幼, 培小這麼多年間，覺得同學和學生家長的素質都真的不錯。

Assume 培小 has 320 students with
40% band 1 and 40% band 2.
=> 128 band 1 and 128 band 2 students

培中: 205 places
assume 10 places allocated to other primary schools' students.
128培小+10 others band1 students
=> 培中 has 138 band 1 students and 67 band 2 students.
excluding the band 2 students, 培中 is band1 中. But after including the band 2 students, in average 培中 is band1尾.

It is the fact that Pui Ching is not a Band 1 school if you defined the band 1 schools should have a lot of band 1 students.

From the latest information, Pui Ching has nearly 50% is band 1 students.  (Note: this rate keeps changing every year).
Each year there are some outsider students allocated by lucky draw which may be those band1/band2 students.  But most of their performance is not good compare with those promoted from Pui Ching Primary. Even both are band 2 students; Pui Ching’s academic level is higher. Actually, many DSS like to enroll Pui Ching student even they are not in band 1 as they know that we have a higher standard.

There is no need for the Primary students to do a lot of exercise for the school to increase the number of band 1 students.
School is only teaching according to their own syllabus. Only starting from this year, they change some of the exam content which more close to the TSA.
It is more important to have the Primary school to educate the students so as to achieve the goals of the Middle school.

In fact, with less than 70% of band 1 students, Pui Ching Middle school is successful in achieving the good results compare with school with those over 90% band 1 students.  

Most people may have the impression that Pui Ching is a traditional school. When my children are studying here, I found that the school keep changing and trying to find the best way to meet with the changing requirements.
One example is they are using story books and articles for teaching English in Primary school instead of Text books.  Pincipal always telling the parents to establish the reading habbit for their children.  Very few and simple dictation for both Chinese and English (only once for every two weeks).  They have 中國文學欣賞 from P1.  It will cover 詩歌、粵由、文章欣賞 etc which is not under exam syllabus.  Many group projects but most are done at school.
Parents will not involve too much as this have very little impact on the marks.
Many activities during lunch time and I am impressed by the shows- 紅藍藝坊which allow students to do their own performance on stage during lunch time. It is not compulsory to learn any musical instruments even they have a well organized 中樂圉 and orchestra.
I heard a student choose to rap a song during the music exam in class.

In the Pui Ching Middle school, there are two class teachers.
There is Eng Literature for all students from F.1.
As told by the school, they are going to have two classes of通識in English in the new 334 system.

Compare with other elite schools, it is not top in terms of academic results but the students here are happy, devoted to their school life, confident and responsible as the school is very emphasis in all round development.
Actually, if you are top in Pui Ching Primary school, you could easily get into other elite schools.


Hope this information could help. Also, if your children are going to be P1 this year, he should able to enjoy the free education in Pui Ching Middle School from F1 to F6.

Students input (S1)=>Band1 &  Band2 even Band3
  Because of no choice -- over 90% from PCPS
(The band 2 & 3 students just means that they are comparing with top students of the same school, not meaning of levels of their abilities)

Students output => Mostly Band 1 students

Not same as other elite schools
Input => Band 1
Output => Band 1

So I think that PCMS is one of the great schools in HK

培正雙語法培育一等生　　母語教學先驅有教無類


【明報專訊】母語教學政策實施10年，中文中學被貶為「第二流」，就連百年老牌名校也無法獨善其身，培正中學取錄的學生有半數屬Band 2(第二成績組別)或以下，校長葉賜添豪言「入得培正，就是Band 1成績離開」，強調培正的「金漆招牌」不靠「來料好」，而是堅持廣東話教學，維持學生的學習興趣，逐步滲入大量英語教材，讓學生兼顧英語又懂得思考。

培正的廣東話教學，百年來曾培育諾貝爾獎得主、高官，過往經驗已證明成功，校長葉賜添說，培正今時今日一樣做得到。他說，培正學生多來自中產家庭，家長關注子女讀書，但該校中一級95%來自聯繫小學，「來料冇得選擇」，而公開試成績與盡收頂尖學生的英文中學比較，也絕不輸蝕。由政府推動母語教學至今，培正一直是母語教學的先驅，實際上培正一直奉行廣東話授課、英文製教材。

循序增英語讀寫聽講

母語教學推行以來，全港的高考英文科整體成績持續下跌，至今年及格率雖稍稍回升0.2個百分點，但較實施政策之前仍差5個百分點。去年全港高考英文及格率約七成，培正及格率卻高達95%，會考英文更連續兩年100％及格或達第二級成績，葉賜添一臉自豪說﹕「(全港英文高考)下跌5%，一直起不來，我們(培正的英文成績)卻起來了。」

而全港每年400多個獲拔尖進大學的尖子中，培正佔了12名，成功拔尖進港大或中大的尖子數額比部分英中還要多。學生來源沒有選擇，培正為何仍能保持各科公開試高增值，英文科更不跌反升？

葉賜添分析致勝之道指出，校方一方面堅持廣東話講課，維持學習興趣；另一方面提供大量多元化的閱讀教材，如網上英文資料，增潤課外知識。學生以最容易理解的母語學習，以英文教材作補充，分階段在不同年級增加英文讀、寫、聽和講的分量，非「一刀切」強行施以英文教學，循序漸進學習。

費盡心思營造英文語境

培正雖是傳統中中，但一直費盡心思營造英文語境。葉賜添說，該校設英語教師辦公室，學生進內只可用英語溝通，又教初中生放眼世界，每早都要看英語國際新聞和回答指定問題。中午又設英文咖啡店、英語戲劇等大量英語課外活動。

推廣「人的教育」帶動成績

葉賜添坦言，培正在1980年代曾成績下跌，但近10年校方「不死谷讀書」，強調以「人的教育」出發。他說，校方現推出多項革新嘗試，如手機教學、學生都必須學習「一體育、一藝術」，以及每周上7至8次生命教育課。其他學校搞小班教學都是從英文科、數學科等入手，培正卻在體育科採用小班教學，一級分開8組學生上課。學生在全人發展下，成績得到帶動提升。

培正中學中四生林躍峰說，培正學生從來不怕學英文、用英語，英文公開試更是完全不擔心，他說﹕「我們(培正學生)努力一點就可拿到A、B級。」

校長︰教學語言一刀切　　忽略中游學生

中文中學於過去10年來飽受負面標籤之苦，身兼中中聯會主席的葉賜添指出，劃分中中、英中的最大禍害，是令「佔大多數的中游學生被忽視」，學生具備英文學習能力，卻只能以中文學習，影響學習信心和興趣。葉賜添直斥「苛政猛於虎」，認為本港急需尋找有特色的雙語教學模式，但不一定是培正的「英文書、中文教」模式。

英文學額不足吸納有能力學生

葉賜添說，政府估計40%升中學童適合英文學習，但准許提供的英文學額僅25%，令這四成學童中有15%落入中中。現有制度下，英中亦可能取錄不少未達英文標準的學生，令英文學額被霸佔。結果，本港初中生各有四分之一成為英中生或進入弱勢中中，剩下的一半入讀一般中中，中游的學生雖具備英文學習能力，卻被限制於中文學習，學生自信因而「被打散」。

「香港急需特色雙語教學良方」

葉賜添指出，現行政策令培正「英文書、中文教」傳統被禁止，「培正如果抗命的話，就等於義和團」。他認為政策令香港面對死路，整體學生英文成績大跌，急需良方提升進入中中的大部分具潛質學生。

「培正模式」為教育界所津津樂道，葉賜添指出，培正特色是堅持母語教學，加以英文補充。他不認為此模式可全面推行至其他中學，政府應允許各校推出多元化教學語言模式，「世界並非單一學習模式的，香港應有特色的語文教學，應該研究『雙語教學』」。

他不贊成單以分班形式微調教學語言，認為會造成「7級大地震」，導致校內標籤、教師工作量增加及行政壓力加劇等效果。

百年孕育精英無數  

香港培正中學有逾百年歷史，是老牌中文中學名校，培育知名校友無數，當中包括首名華裔諾貝爾物理學獎得獎者崔琦、獲得菲爾茲獎章的國際級數學家丘成桐，以及政務司長唐英年等等。

雖然是中中，但培正中學的學生英文水平一向不俗，去年培正高考生梁元科更打破中中生難奪A的「宿命」，摘得英文A級，為中中吐氣揚眉。

培正中學由香港浸信會聯會創辦，該會1889年於廣州創辦書塾，即培正中學的雛形，香港培正分校直至1933年才成立。1941年香港淪陷時，培正曾經停辦，至1945年二戰結束才復課，1946年遷回現何文田校舍。
