himching,

Do they expect kids to have a good command of English to attend their course?  Will kids have a lot of chances to speak, or do the teachers do all the talkings and the kids just do as they are told?

Thanks.

I think GSIS accept all applications for summer school until all the spaces are filled in.  My girl was barely three last year when she went to the summer school and so could not describe in very detail what was happening in the class.  But I think the idea was to have fun while learning English.  The learning would come from both speaking and listening.

What I notice was that GSIS wants the kids to be independent.  For example, they let my girl get changed and dry herself after the swimming class.  The teacher only offer help after the kids tried on their own.  Also, they don’t have fixed toilet time and if the kid wants to go to wash room, they need to ask the teacher and go on their own.  My girl actually became more independent after summer school.

How old is your kid?  I think they don't accept kid younger than 3 year old.

Thanks for your reply.  My twin boys are in K3.  I'm looking for a place for them to learn English while having fun in summer.  They joined a summer course last year at a kindergarten, but the class size was quite big, and the kids didn't have many chances to speak - mostly listening to instructions on what to do.  I wonder whether GSIS can provide a good environment for learning English in an interactive way.  Please advise.

Thanks for your information. I've enrolled the course for my daughter who will be nearly 4 by that time. Maybe, our girls will be classmate. Is your daughter studying in an international or a local kinder? My girl is in a local kinder and I want to provide her with an environment that can encourage her with speak more in English.

BTW, how many swimming lessons are there in a week? Do you know what they teach the kids during the swimming class. My girl is a bit afraid of water . She cried and refused to follow the coach when she attended the swimming class last year. I hope the swimming class (maybe just playing in water with other kids) will arouse her interest in swimming.

For the transport to school, I note in the web-site that the traffic will be very busy. Is it the case? I've planned to take her to school by taxi but don't know if it's easy to get a taxi after school. Any idea?

Our kid could be in the same class but it will depend on the age of the kids enrolled this year.

For the little kids, the swimming class was just playing with water.
The swimming session was only once a week.
I remember my girl told me that some children were afraid of water and thus did not join the “swimming”.
But I think there was something else those kids can play with around the same area.

The traffic was okay in the morning.
I took the minibus 1 from Central.
It did not take me very long.
I guess it was because it was very early in morning.
However, my maid told me that it was very difficult to catch the minibus or the big bus after class.

It was easier to catch a taxi than the minibus / bus.

My girl goes to YMCA international kinder in TST.

Before she joined the summer school last year, she did not speak much English although she could understand quite well.
I am not sure if GSIS is a good place to learn English but at least when she joined K1 last September, she did not have any problem communicating in the class.

I think there was about 20 kids in each class with one teacher and one assistant.
I remember that one morning the teacher told me that my girl enjoyed the painting session on the day before very much.
So, I guess that shows the teacher knows their student well?

I have just received an e-mail from GSIS that all the summer activities will be cancelled and all the fees will be refunded but less an handling fee of $200.
