To caucasions, dictation is useless because they never had it in elementary school. They learned phonics in school, do spelling tests, learn new vocabularies through daily life, and most important of all, they in fact READ A LOT of books (both assigned or unassigned from school)!! So grammar wouldn't be a problem for them because they've learned it so casually.
For a long run, "learning with fun" might work better provided that the child would do some readings, or/and watch english channel tv at his own time. However, immediate progress would be very little.
How did the new tutor conduct the lesson? was that somewhat similar to the old tutor, only with more updates? or was it a totally different systematic method? Regardless, pick what you think is most beneficial to your child. :)
Cheers,
