I did this before (ABRSM piano exam). Basically what you do is to write a letter to ABRSM in the U.K.. Then they'll reply to you in 2 weeks or so and ask you to record the 3 pieces and send to them, together with a fee (15 pounds or so in bank draft). They'll assess the recording and give you new comments, but NO MARKS. If they think the original marks were mis-judged, they will allow you to retake the exam AT THE SAME LEVEL free of charge in the next round of exam.
I sent the letter with the appeal fee, but then I decided we shouldn't waste time to record the 3 pieces or to retake the exam at the same level after half year, so I stopped pursuing. And ABRSM did send the bank draft back to me (but returning it to the bank cost much service charge).

- Practical examinations: Appeals concerning the validity of results should be made only by the applicant and must be addressed in writing to the Director of Examinations. Such appeals should be postmarked within 14 days of the results’ despatch from ABRSM, accompanied by a fee of £15 per candidate (or £150 for a group of ten or more candidates) and a copy of the mark form(s) concerned. ABRSM aims to acknowledge such appeals within three working days, and to respond with the outcome within three weeks of the acknowledgement. A full and thorough investigation will take place by the Quality Assurance Manager and/or the Chief Examiner. Occasionally, ABRSM may request a recording of the candidate performing the examination pieces and a selection of the technical requirements for review by the Chief Examiner. An independent person may be involved at this stage. Should any appeal prove to be substantiated, the appeal fee will be returned and a voucher issued entitling the candidate to enter again at the same grade in the next examination Period. If the appeal is unsubstantiated, the fee will be retained and the mark form returned with a detailed response.
