Hi qq_dad and yeenmama,

mmcht,

mmcht,

The Magic School Bus Series, 也不錯。

Dear Logos parents and Paul Yau

My kid was adimitted to Logos P1 for 07/08. I've been comparing the schools admitted for months.

I've read through the 86 pages of your sharing, and other sharing related to Logos in BK. Your sharing is valuable for my understanding the Logos.

I like Logos very much, but I still have some questions:

1 Would you tell me the extra-curricular activities of Logos?

We're quite concerned the all-round exposure of my kid in school, in paricular sports groups, swimming groups, gymnastic groups, multi-intelligence groups, musical instrument groups, drama groups, musical theatre groups, musical instrument groups, scouts, olympiad maths groups, etc. eg,

1a how many extra-curricular activities groups are in the school? I've found 60 extra-curricular activities groups in Kowloon Tong School, 71 in S.K.H. Tak Tin Lee Shiu Keung, both won relative impressive number of awards in multiple intelligence competition in the past years. I understand number does not tell everything, but it's an indicator I'd consider.

1b What are the major ones, other than choir and Japanaese (I found these 2 in your discussion)?

1c What're the time of extra-curricular activities, are they 6th-7th lessons (in fact, I also don't know the time slots of these 2 lessons)?

I and my wife has intentionally exposed my kid to various scopes of activities in the past, and found that the results are impressive. He is now interested in swimming, gymnastics, martial arts, dancing, piano playing, choir, running, calculating, reading, looks like a combination of my wife and I. However, we cannot afford much time to teach him, or he wouln't have enough spend spare time to join so many acctivities outside school hours in the future, in particular his spare time would drop substantially after entering primary school. We have to rely more on his school on extra-curricular activities in the future.

2 In which fields does Logos have school teams? I've compared various schools' performance in inter-school competitions/programs, eg athletics (HK overall), gymnastics, multiple intelligence, olympiad maths, musical festivals, speech festivals, 升中伯樂計劃, etc. and found that Logos seems to be not active (not listed in the award winners list), or only a few Logos' students won awards, in these popular competitions/programs. It seems to reflect students in Logos may be less exposed to inter-school extra-curricular activities, or Logos students are not competitive compared to other schools. Is my interpretation correct?

3 Does Logos join any on-line learning programs/competition, eg Planetii Maths, i-cube multiple subjects, etc? I found these programs are quite useful for my kid's learning. He likes them. If Logos has these on-line learning programs/competition, that's great.

4 Any bible, moral education, or related classes for students? If yes, how many hours per week, and how are the results, judging from your children?

My wife is very concerned about my kid's moral development. She heard from some Logos parent friends that the gifted students there tend to compete with other students (she doesn't like that), rather than sharing with others (she prefers students to be like that) (our kid is also gifted). I read from some of your comments that the moral education is quite good in Logos, but I still worry about my kid, if he studies in Logos. Would you have any information that may release my concern?

5 English standard of Logos? I read from this forum that Logos' English standard is not worse than other schools. Would you have any more information/comparison which shows that Logos students are competitive compared to other schools, or above average? I see some schools using textbooks with more advanced grades; some schools having students winning English awards in multiple intelligence competitions; but I haven't found some open indicators reflecting Logos' English standard compared with the average schools.

6 Which subjects use textbooks? I read from this forum that no textbooks are used, but I heard from staff that only Science doesn't use textbook, and Logos use textbooks (plus worksheets) for English, Chinese, etc. Would you tell me which subjects use textbooks and which subjects don't?

I'm searching for favourable information that confirm my selection of Logos is right decision. Hope you all can help me.

Thanks a lot in advance.

Regards

Dear t421316,

It appears that your child is a very heavily-gifted child and you have a very high expectation ( if not demand ) on your child and his school. I appreciate that you allow Logos to be one of your choices, yet, frankly speaking, Logos does have limitations especially in the school's early childhood stage.

You did search and prepare a lot before raise the very sensible questions . It is witnessed that you are extremely concerned with the education of your child .

While I am not attempting to answer your questions because I do not have sufficient information , I still would like to remind that the school may let you a bit disappointed if the focus is placed on the now measurable quantity and quality of the academic and extra-curricular activities, the competition awards and the academic achievements --- partly because the school is still a very new one despite that it is going to do more and do the best. As you should have been aware that I think it will be easily out-ranked by comparing with many of the famous traditional schools and international schools indeed in the aspects of competitions.

For my case, yet I still prefer to let my younger son continuing with his studies in this school for many many valid reasons I deem. On the other hand, for your case, on the contrary, I would wonder and like to have sharing on your thought and mind that, why not consider ( or why not directly ) let him entering a school with all you want as indicated in your research ?

Just for brain-storming and sharing. Thanks !

Dear t421316,
Thank you for your effort in drafting up the long list of queries. This shows that you do have a keen interest in Logos. Below is some limited info I can share with you, though I'd like to emphasize that this is just my personal opinion and that I do not speak on behalf of the school.
-Logos has started in year 2001.Though our school might not have yet up to 60 different types of extra-curricular activities to offer; nevertheless, as a parent for 3 years, I've seen tremendous improvement on activities program planning, from a few to offer at the start, up to more or less +/- 30 for selection within 2 years. In terms of the types of different activities, you may take a browse at our school's website under “News/Events”(最新消息/通告)to obtain a complete listing. I hope this piece of info would help answer your question No. 1.
Besides what is mentioned on the activities list, we do have scout groups for upper primary section, and Brownies for girls as of Sept. 07. Like many other parents, I'm eager to await many more exciting new activities that are yet to be launched in Sept./Oct. 07.
-The duration of each lesson is 45 mins. Taking the past year as an example, the school planned a double time slot once a week for mandatory activities (activities arranged for each grade free of charge) within the school hours, plus another time slot (45 mins)on Friday afternoon for optional (fees applied) activities.
-Existing school teams for 06-07: basketball, soccer, badminton, track and field, choir;
-Quote<<Does Logos join any on-line learning programs/competition, eg Planetii Maths, i-cube multiple subjects, etc? I found these programs are quite useful for my kid's learning. He likes them. If Logos has these on-line learning programs/competition, that's great.>> Unquote.    Not that I'm aware of
-Bible, moral education
Religion is taught once a week, mostly through story-telling for lower grades. Moral education is taught once a week. To me,this is a subject that requires parental involvement and guidance (a 3-party joint participation) to go along with each theme taught at school to ensure the best results.
-Competition against sharing. Competitions happen everywhere, to be honest. It depends how you want to look at it. Personally, I don't see anything wrong with friendly competition amongst peers by means of competing and sharing at the same time. Kids need peer-group competitions and comparison from time to time to learn and improve. It all boils down to how the children are taught at home rather than how you would expect the school to deliver.
-Textbooks. At Logos, worksheets are all you'll have (at least for the past 3 years).
-Awards, Inter-school competitions awards, etc. - - If“award winning”is one of your crucial considerations, it looks like fame is what you're after. Fair enough. Then, Logos may NOT YET be able to deliver up to your expectations. How would you expect a school with only 5 years of history be able to deliver something out of the extraordinary? Fundamental grounding works, such as curriculum design, faculty stability, their competency and dedication, infrastructural planning, administration management, external liaison, financial stability...and many more etc. are much more important factors for consideration at this stage than award winning. To me, those are the primary concerns I would take into account for the best of my kid's benefit and interest.
Talking so much, I would strongly advise you to get in touch with our teacher-parent liaison, whom I believe would be of tremendous help to answer all of your queries.

Hi yeenmama,

For the summer camp, does your son enjoy it?

qq told me that she was surprised to find that many teachers were wearing glasses at night.  Besides, she enjoyed it very much.  She also made some new friends as she was staying with schoolmates of next class.

Hi qq_dad,

Sure. My son enjoys the camping much.  That's really a great job for the teachers to organize and arrange such a pleasurable, exciting and magnificent camp.

Before, I do worry that my son was unable to manage his own things and his responsibilities as he is quite absent-minded.   Luckily, he lost only a piece of chopstick after 3-day-camp!!!   He told me that he liked the outdoor activities arranged by playright on the last day of the camping!!!

Hello mmcht,

The following lists are some of the books recommended for P.1-2 kids:

1. Oxford story tree (stage 1-9) ==> It's cheaper to buy from HKPTU (~15-20% off not sure ). If your son loves this series of stories ,  you may checkout the oxford reading tree interactive story CD-COM (stage 1-9) from hk public library. Each CD has ~ 6-12 interactive stories. It only costs $2 as reservation fee to recall a book/CD per title and pick up at any designated public library which is convenient to you.

2. Magic Box - You can get the Mainland China version (same as the one available in Greenfield) at a lower $$. A boxed set with all 40 books +40VCDs ~$300 only.

3. Magic School Bus -  Non-fiction Science Picture book.

4. Level readers - Step into reading (Level 1-5 and Simple Chapter books), Usborne readers, DK readers with many different titles ==> available in any public library.

Dear yeenmama,

Wow, your children read so much English books ...   while mine ... .

Anyway Ken does have some progress though it is just a small pace. He had finished all the summer assignments except book reading. In this summer vacation, every day he takes time to do some mathematics exercise, clarinet practice and read or write something. Weekly he will have a 1-and-half-hour English course, a half-hour Kumon course and 3-hour choir practice at school. For the rest of this vacation, besides will go overseas trips twice with the kids, I just intend to have revision with him on English and to guide him to complete the Shaghai Tour Project. Wish him could step up for advancement on his own initiative after the vacation.
