The school has the right to test and filter out students in any way they want, I just doubt that this is the right method, that is just my opinion.
If they are copying WKF to take videos as a first round filter, I personally think that it isn't really a good idea, to be honest. I looked at many of the videos take by other parents, and I thought it was really hard to tell if one kid was better than the other, especially if you are the top 10%. Yes, one may speak much more fluently, but it's easy to catch up later on. It can also be "faked" by the parents. I was wondering if the admission personnel was just rolling a dice, or are they being overly stringent and just looking at points that don't really assess the innate talent of the child.
WKF students take the IGCSEs and A Levels and their results are really below average, compared to the international schools. Their admissions results to Universities in the UK / HK isn't as good as the International Schools either. I was expecting them to be better given their selection criteria. I did some calculations and I remember WKF had something like a 2% admissions rate. That's better than Stanford, MIT, Oxford, Cambridge. The international schools don't even have admissions tests, and every year, many students land at top universities overseas and in Hong Kong. Not sure what went wrong with the local through train ...
I think one of the reasons for this is that while the nature of the international tests such as IB / A Levels look easier than DSE, I think it is deceptively so. While the content required for memorization is less, a lot of questions rely on your critical thinking skills rather than rote memorization. In fact, I think it really tests the child on the innate ability to think critically, to think on your feet. Something that can't be tested with a story telling video, made by your parents, when you are in K3. Of course, what kind of qualities you want in a student depends on your school philosophy, so I guess this has an effect on the outcome. Maybe the school values hard work more than talent, or maybe the belief on parents role in overcoming a lack of talent?
