Dear Tess,
Oh No!)))))))))))))).
Please do not make such interpretation on my question.

I have no intention to represent any other moms whom using Glenn Doman Method here but I do have interest to learn any other opinions about this method.

There is no perfect education method in the world, if there is any ( I wonder) but it is still lack of perfect user. So it is definitely free to talk on this subject with me. Actually I really would like to know more about it. Negative or positive, all comments are welcome.

Hope you can understand, to me, such question just same as many others I may ask every day, what type of playgroup is suitable for my baby? Any other lotions are help to release the pain that dry weather brought in?

Cheers,

Re: 資優兒童Baby

Dear Critic & others,

I am sure you son can read soon as you read a lot to him too. At first, I didn't think he knew the words while I was reading the stories. However, as time goes by, he pointed at words after words himself while I was reading and knew when to turn page. I fully understand what it means by 日子有功. So all moms who love to read with the kids, don't give up. It is just a matter of time.

Let me share my experience. I read the book "How to teach your baby to read", "How to teach your baby Maths" and "How to teach your baby Encyclopedia Knowlege" more than a year ago. When my boy was about 6 month old, I played flash cards (frankly not really the way of Dr. Doman). He enjoyed it and I therefore bought other flash cards like numbers, fruits, vegetables, transportation, animals, etc.). I sent my son to attend playgroup in Causway Bay though we live in Kwun Tong for the playgroup uses the Dr. Doman's way to play with the kids. My boy likes it much too.

We tried to use the dot cards to teach him maths last Nov but my husband told me that he didn't have much interest. Owing to the limited time, I can't do it myself and basically I drop it totally. I guess we start too late. If we started when he was 6 month old, the result would be better.

Tess, you mentioned you read books by the educational expers right. What/Who are they? I would love to read some too? I read a book called "How to raise a bright child. Practical ways to encourage your childs's talents from 0-5 years" by Dr. Joan Freeman. I like this book for it helps remind me that parents are the best-placed people to help their children fulfill their potential. Every child wants to be good at something and every child can be. I try to give a free hand to my boy so that he can explore more.

I have bought a lot of Chinese flash cards recently and hope one day my boy would love reading Chinese as much as English.

LC, don't worry, I believe Tess doesn't misinterpret your question. Feel free to express your idea and share your experience.

Re: 資優兒童Baby

I read Glenn Doman books (both Chinese & English version) during my pregnancy and started to show flash cards & red dots when my son was one week old.

He has finished reading the 100 dots when he was 3 or 4 months old. I did not try the addition etc... because it was hard to tell if he can readlly understand or not? And remember, the book keep telling you don't 'test' your children.  Because he was just a little baby, I could not tell if he understood those flashcards or not.

To teach him Maths,  I rather give him something real, apples, oranges and asked him to count.

As from he is 4 months old, I've started to read to him and found he is very interested in reading books. By 6 months, he was able to point at the picture and made some sounds.

So far, I'm glad on his reading progress. Last night, he read on his own, he pointed at the picture and say, "car", then he spell out, "c-a-r".  He was not 100% correct on the spelling because he has not learned all the lower case letters. However, I noticed that his reading skill has improved and he knows about the vowels.

Re: 資優兒童Baby

Critic
Honestly, Glenn Doman "How to teach your baby maths" is not quiet good, because I have tried to apply on my daughter. My son doesn't look either.
However for Glenn Doman's "How to teach your baby to read" and "How to teach your baby Encyclopedia Knowlege" are work quite well to my daughter and son. Comparing with the her classmates, she is very good at recongising Chinese and English characters. For my son, he is 17 months old, he is able to identify the colour, shapes and lots of different things. Sometimes, he could prounce simple English, such as "Car, clock, ship..." Remember, they are not gifted child.
Besides the Glenn Doman's methods, I also teach my daughter Phonics and I have read lots and lots of books to her as well. I just try every method and hope they work on my children.
I can't say Glenn Doman's method is the best. But, those books could give me some guidelines and inspiration on teaching my children. This is my pesonal experience and opinion only.
At the moment, I am still searching some methods to teach their maths. Do you or other BK mother have any suggestion?

Re: 資優兒童Baby

I'm sorry.  I thought I'm being funny but apparently I'm 衰多口.  I really apologize to LC and those who find my message offensive.

Every now and then, a topic here turned into an argument whether Mr Glenn Doman's way of learning works or not!

Tszfungma,
I had a very bad time with my boy last night.  It was really freezing at 3am in the morning and I got a bad flu.  I feel rather ill now.  Will come up here again when I feel better.

Re: 資優兒童Baby

Tess,

Hope you're feeling better by now.

My husband is on trip, it's so hard to take care my son alone during the weekend. It was cold and not able to go out.

But the good news it, he has learned the time this week. I use a toy clock to teach him and now he is able to tell me,"1 o'clock, 2 o'clock"  I asked him, can you show me 8 o'clock, 9 o'clock and he can do it without making mistake.

Re: 資優兒童Baby

Hi Tess,

Do you feel better now? Why bad time? Did he wake up at 3:00 am? As mentioned before, my son also wakes up several times during the night, I don't know whether it is because of the bad dreams or not. However when I "ET" him, he feels better and falls alseep again most of the time. How old is your son? He is so lovely.

Critic, your son is smart. I am really glad that there are some many moms here also spend time on reading with their young kids. Very often we hear that parents complains that their children don't like reading. I strongly believe that this habit should be established when they are still young. One expert says books should be put together with the toys for both bring them joy.

I once read a book called "我家寶寶考第一". As expected, most kids interviewed like reading much. Though we definitely don't need our kids to be no. 1 in class, reading not only brings them joy but also helps them a lot academically.

Re: 資優兒童Baby

Hi all,

Those who are interested in 資優課程 should refer to what Adayeung posted. Hurry up for the course will be commenced on 27 Feb. I hope they will accept my application for they give priority to those parents who have gifted child.

Re: 資優兒童Baby

Tszfungma,

I graduated from Poly and have a few friends teaching there. I doubt the quality of their course, especially these kind of part-time course. Better save the money to buy books or take an online course from a better university in the US.

Re: 資優兒童Baby

Critic,

Thanks for your advice. I have the same concern and therefore I seldom take short course. I will just apply first and see. They will provide an orientation before the commencement of the course.

I have gone through the course outline which sounds interesting to me. I don't expect too much for I have read some articles/books about it already. Since it is part of the degree course and a 3-unit course, it shouldn't be too bad, hopefully.

Actually I am interested in courses related to 幼兒教育 and by taking this course, I may then decide if I really want to do anything further. One point worths mentioning is the course will give priority to those who work in related fields, e.g. teachers, social workers, parents with gifted child. I am sure I can also learn from the classmates too.

Do you have any other recommendations? Thanks in advance.

Re: 資優兒童Baby

Tszfungma,

One of my friend has recently completed a 3 year 幼兒教育 certificate course in Batpist University. (I guess it's 3 years) She is working in an international school but she is not a teacher, she is only interested to know more about children education but she said the course is quite useless.

If your interest is mainly for your son, I don't think you should waste your money and time to take a few years course.

I once interested to take an online course from US and obtained the book list, most books are available in Central Library.  After going thru those books, I found it is soooo boring as they talk too much theory.  (I can't recall which university, sorry!)

You are do a search in Google or Yahoo, sure can find some.

I'm no longer interested in too serious course, I better spend my time to play with my son!

Re: 資優兒童Baby

Hi Critic,

Thanks for your comment.

I don't do it just for my son. I like knowing more 幼兒教育 for I love kids, maybe one day I will work in this field though it is far too early to say anything concrete.  Actually before I took my MBA two years ago, I knew that CU had a Master Degree course in this area. However, I  was not qualified for my first degree was not related and I had not experience in the fieild at all.

Anyway, I won't apply for the coming term as the timing doesn't fit my schedule. Like what you say instead of doing formal study, I would rather spend time on playing with my son - just max. 2 hours a day during weekdays.

Just wonder how Tess is doing now. Hope she has totally recovered and can chat with us very soon.

Re: 資優兒童Baby

Tszfungma,

Acutally I have just completed a 3 months training on American Accent & Intonation in the US. I personally want to acquire a higher standard in speaking English. I know the HK teachers won't able to teach to my son so I better learn it now.

Are you planning to take the course offer by Poly?

Do you mind to tell me which MBA school you are graduated? I know it's tough because my husband went thru it a few years go.

Re: 資優兒童Baby

Hi Critic,

Is the course "Accent & Intonation" an on-line one. It sounds interesting.  As I have never studied abroad, I am not so happy with my accent too but I am afraid that it is extremely hard to change it. For my son, I just take it easy. I was a private tutor during undergraduate and some of my students studied abroad after F5. After studying overseas for a few years, they speak like native. Of course, not all of them but those who care. I took a introduction course by British Council. It is about teaching young leaners English Language. However, if I would like to qualify myself to teach English (note not in primary or secondary schools), I need to quit my present job for it is about 10-week intensive seminars and some classes are like 9am - 5 pm.

Regarding the course by PolyU, I don't know yet. I will apply first and see I can be accepted. Even if I am accepted, I may wait for the next term due to the schedule.

The university is called Macquarie University in Sydney Australia. It is sort of distance learning and the Secretariat is HKMA.

Re: 資優兒童Baby

Tszfungma,

It's not really an online course.  It comes with some self studying material (12 or 13 CD and book). I call the tutor once a week for 30 mins, then we exchange email, homework, recording etc.... It's not easy, very tough as we are too old to change our accent.  After completion of the course, you still have to learn on your own, it's a life-time studying & learning.  I can't take any regular course as my job requires to travel.

I think we can only speak like a native if we are living in an English speaking country during our childhood.

I also have the info on the British Council Course, you don't have to quit your job because they have one for part-time study, right?  My friend has completed the same course in UK and she is now teaching in Poly U - Business English.  Another friend is taking the one in HK.

By the way, my husband bought 2 Leapfrog DVD from the US, 30 mins/each. The first one is to teach kid (2-5) ABC sounds, e.g. C says 'ka', it's very interesting.  My son loves it very much (I know nothing about phonics and I learn from the DVD too!) It's cheap, less than US$10/each.  My son wants to watch 3-4 times a day.  Much better than DWE.

Re: 資優兒童Baby

critic,

Would you please share a bit more about the "on-line' course and the leapfrog DVD with us?  These two sound quite interesting to me.

With two young boys, I think it's bettter for me to equip myself before it's too late!

Tkx in advance.

Re: 資優兒童Baby

Hi Critic,

The course that I mentioned is a part time one but there are at least two-week intensive seminars, running during the days. Since it is hard for me to take two-week off, I can't take it. Two of my classmates in the introduction course are English teachers in a Band 1 secondary school. They told me that they would prefer to do it in UK (about the cost) during their summer holidays.

My boy like phonics too. I bought him so far two CD + books of Ladybird. Later on, I think I will buy more, but one after one.

Does you boy like Thomas the Tank Engline. Since my boy likes vehicles so much, he is a fan of Thomas & Friends. He has now 15 books of Thomas. I heard from other moms here that there are also Thomas & Friends DVD in HMV, for sure I will buy one once I find time.
