In general, I don't like leveled readers since I find them too artificial and one dimension. Most of these books are designed to suit particular curriculums like ORT for the UK and as a result, the words are chosen to suit the curriculum rather than be well written. Only exception is the I Can Read series which has classics like Frog and Toad.
Given a choice, I would rather read picture books which are more interesting and have better varieties.
I have many booklists, in fact so many booklists that I don't know what to do with them. Problem is a good book doesn't mean it is a book that you child will enjoy. Then what good does reading that book do?
I would suggest starting off with a list like this one http://www.nea.org/grants/kids-top-100-books.html and then see which books your child enjoy and go from there. You should also consult award lists especially Caldecott, Newbery and Fengzikai for Chinese.
