That's right! However, nobody will pick up a Shakespeare unless they are asked to do assignment, or they are very fond of English.
So if you would like your high school kid's English level the same as those in the States, "do as Romans do". How? Enrol them in an English class which ask them to read Shakespeare!

呢d都係我既理想, 家長緊係想自己小朋友多d"文學修養", 但睇書係佢既喜好/好personal, 我只會推介, 唔會強迫, 所以好多時我會為佢係library借大堆書, 希望會有幾本合佢心水.

very admire a lot of kids could read such difficult books.  I am in the midst of training my son to read books.  He likes reading but still love me to read with him, simple books.  Can you share with me how to change your kid from reading with parents to self-reading.... how could you tackle those difficult words?  When he reads difficult words, all he does is to stop and wait for me......
Please could someone share with me....

我既經驗是小朋友喜歡你伴讀就愉快地伴他讀吧，永遠比他一個閱讀就是愉快的經驗、就是一個與爸媽在一起愉快的經驗，那他就會愛上閱讀。那種心急孩子可以成為那「成績好的孩子都睇好多書」的心態會令你沮喪，孩子都會有壓力。佢能力到就會自己讀，夠能力都要你陪，即是他渴望你的愛，更要多陪他。不要用"training"這字吧，輕鬆D，睇書原本就是娛樂一種，叻既小朋友睇書睇得深，我只能看作是天外有天，不能也就照辦煮碗套在自己孩子身上。

我的經驗很不錯，在此分享。
伴讀是兩歲左右直至五歲，每晚睡前五個故事，故事書全部是購買的方便他隨時重温，睡前其他時間，盡量不伴讀，他想睇書就會用盡方法去自行理解文字。不用干預他是在看圖還是讀文字。終於就有一天，偷偷發現小朋友，竟然自己在朗讀出一本書。最好在小朋友五至六歲前發展自行閱讀的能力，當然是指細本故事書。我小朋友是五歲開始能閱讀，這時小朋友睇書興趣大增，就不能只靠家中藏書滿足需要。我用K3整個下學期，從圖書館借了整套magic key（由stage3開始借），暑假前看完。小朋友的閱讀能力又大進一步。
如是者，我是從圖書館借書，配合小朋友能力的提力選擇合適的書。題材不局限，借了回家就可知道他的興趣和能力。
小一開始自己追看Geronimo Stilton , Magic tree house 等系列，我不鼓勵借太深的書給初小看，太深的書如果有 audio 版本就另計。小一下學期某天，竟然囝囝從學校借回ccharles dicken ，harry potter 的書，真是嚇一跳。小朋友能夠自己選擇多種類的書，代表他的閱讀興趣能力正式確立。harry potter 的書，我着實不想初小看，第一太冗長浪費時間，第二是不想他沉迷這類書。不過，小一暑假時，買了一本最薄的potter滿足他，其他的不借不買。仲有，小一時看的captain underpant 我認為方向不好，我會收埋唔俾他見到，書櫃只放我認為正經的書。
現在我囝小二，看英文書不用我故勵，出街要帶書，一個人可以靜靜打書釘兩小時，roald dahl 是最愛，每次看完電影，會要求買原著故事看，圖書館書店是最愛到的地方，下一步，我希望他看完所有black cats 。
說的好長，總括是，六歲前伴讀是基石，家中要藏書，最好看series的書，

As a leisure or learning purpose ， i believe no one will pick up shakespear！想要多些墨水寧看jane austen，shakespear 的文字早不合時，讀大學修eng lit 都覺苦悶，作為一個play 去欣賞咀嚼是另一回事，日常的文章出現如此文字可成為jargon
我指的是shakespear原裝版不合小學生，不是改編版。

係, 我都上網search 過..........但可以預約, 叫佢運返過黎我屋企附近的library, 但就需時長d

上星期去過教協, 搵吾到呢個作者既書.............

但就買左一本avatar, 同一本吾知乜野書(未得閒看, 佢自己話想看)

講一個黑人(女), 佢男朋友同佢個best friend 有左, 之後個黑人走左, 個best friends 病, 臨c 托弧(個男朋友吾知有個女), 而個黑人又有左新boy friend..............

當中有d 情節都講黑人同個白種女仔的故事, 但就比較'開放', 有d露骨情節

我估會出年初中, 比呀女看

我希望有人推介一些有多集的長編英文小說系列，而不是一些獨立的英文小說，因為小說系列會吸引小朋友一集一集地追看

我個仔剛看完Percy Jackson ， 佢話很好看。之前就看Warriors， 這套書頭三個series佢都十分喜愛。還有Wimpy kid和Dead Famous 系列都是他近期的至愛。這幾個series都幾適合男孩子看。
