I was in a band 1 girls' catholic school in HK, then went abroard during early secondary. That was many years ago. Even a band 1 girls' catholic school has its own problems, so don't be naive.
I was in a public high school. Each year had about 300+ to 400 students. The school was huge. So I did see a broad spectrum of people. Yes, girls wore make up. There was no uniform, so you could pretty much wear what you wanted within reason - definitely nothing too revealing or out of bounds. I didn't see a problem with that. There were always a group of top students, a bunch in the middle and some at the bottom. I didn't know if anybody took drugs. I assumed there probably was. A school is a miniature reflection of society after all. It's a matter of which group of students your child chooses to associate with.
Coming back to HK LS vs IS. Many people have pointed out that there are just as many drugs and social problems in the news concerning LS. It's just that nowadays in this material society, I don't see any difference. Many parents who send their children to IS are from hardworking middle class families. If you are considering sending your child to an IS, I assume that you will look into the background of the LS as well - not unless you plan to go to a school like 鮮魚行 (no disrespect intended) - the family background of many students could be quite similar to that of many IS. So we are back to square one - material superfluousness. I know teenagers at IS who have friends taking drugs, but her own family is very religious and the child definitely won't be any strayed lamb. It's more a matter of how you teach your child at home no matter what school you go to.
You may have heard many "bad comments" about IS, but I can also tell you that I heard many bad comments about LS - how the emphasis on academics and very little else kills creativity, strained family relationship, suicide reports, drug problems...need I go on?
