I am a bit worry about my kid's English learning!  As I learnt from the teacher last Fri that APS is focuing on training pupils creative thinking rather than drilling the grammatical skills.  They believe that all pupils can handle grammar with confidence while in P.4 or above.   I must say that this teaching philosophy is great, but I think grammar learning is also playing important role in English learning.

As I know that your little princess is in P.4, can you share your experience with me?

宣小係中文小學，而又無中學，到小六畢業時，學生是要和那些英文小學的學生，又或著那些英文讀高一級的私小，去爭中學學位。過去宣小的升中成績比其他小學好，其實反映了它的畢業生的英語能力不弱於英文小學的學生或那些英文科讀高一級的學校學生。

宣小的英文科有兩個很重要的成功因素：(1)以communicative approach代替traditional grammatical approach，(2)語音教學(i.e. phonics & IPA)緊連整個英文課程。這兩個因素令學生在聽說讀寫四方面，都比一般學校強。你應該已經發覺宣小無論默書，測驗和考試都要考phonics。到高年班，學生是要懂得做語音拼寫。宣小學生的語音能力是比其他學校強得多，而語音能力是聆聽、說話以及閱讀的重要基礎能力。至於communicative approach，其實已經有很多研究證明比traditional grammatical approach有效得多，而教局的新英語課程亦是採用communicative approach。

如果學校採用communicative approach，而又想加強grammar教學，我相信就要處理英文科的課時問題。如果你有留意，中文小學的英文科課時是略比中文科少的，宣小亦不例外。如果要在communicative approach之上，再加強grammar教學，就需要更多的英文科課時，這就會影嚮到其它科目。

我個人不覺得grammar上的差距產生了甚麼問題，因為grammar rules並不難學。以囡囡為例，她在宣小是英文成績較差的學生，但她都能夠在小三升小四的暑期取得flyers14盾的成績，所以根本不用擔心英文科的水平。

I think u have worry on English teaching in APS.  As What ChiChiPaPa mentioned, I alsN believe APS students are not weak in English.  

My daughter just took Cambridge Flyer on Saturday.  I had a look at the requirement for Flyer which like ChiChiPaPa provided the details earlier.  Basically, APS covered almost all during P3.  My daughter did not do much preparation for the test but she said it was not difficult at all. Well, I can't be sure how she does.  Only that showed she has confidence on it.  She is not unfamiliar with the materials.

APS does not drill grammar but they do cover grammar items through teaching readers.  Students were taught about grammar in different ways.  And they need to know how to apply the grammar well.  So don't underestimated them @. @ and don't worry.  :)

真係幾耐無出 post, 我呢排多數留言在 "課外活動" 個邊, 因細女啱啱考到香港兒童合唱團, 想同佢先認識一 D 新朋友嘅家長...唔知日後有無機會我兩個女可以同台表演呢 ? 好期待呀....

呢個星期剛測完驗, 我同個大女諗住可以鬆一鬆, 點知第七週又話考普通話同音樂, 睇怕都要"拿拿臨"叫小提琴老師同佢揀首拉得好 D 嘅歌考試.....講開考試, 小女於九月尾考五級鋼琴嘅成績剛於前日收到啦, 今次佢好好彩考到.....136 分, 我同鋼琴老師都好滿意, 希望佢上星期應考嘅五級小提琴都可以順利過到就好啦....

講起考琴，又想向妳取經。囝囝年初第一次考三級鋼琴，順利過關。但現在我有點迷失，下個目標應該是什麼？四級五級都好似手掌唔夠大，又唔高踩pedal。難到真的要暫緩一年，等生理條件符合再算？

講開考琴呢個問題呢......你一定未見過小女嘅"真身", 直到而家為止, 佢都未可以坐在琴椅上踩 pedal, 如果係比賽的話, 佢會倚住張琴椅踩 pedal, 其實都 OK...至於考試, 老師就幫佢揀 3 首唔使踩 pedal的考試歌, 所以今次又過到關...其實你仔仔如果已經考完 3 級, 下個目標正路應該係 5 級, 或者又會唔會考左樂理先呢 ?

我個女其實只係數學較為好 D, 英文就實次次都嚇到我一額汗, 加上今次份測驗卷都幾深同埋要佢地諗多 D, 佢就做得唔係太好, 而家惟有趁考試前多做一些練習, 希望考試時追得返....

Nice to chat with u again.  For the question that u asked, I cannot recall that I saw my daughters' performace that year.  My daughter was in the team in P2.  Last year I did not let her in and she is not invited this year.  

If u see notice in the orange book, I am sure u should go.  Even if you cannot find any notice but your son mentioned that, u should go too.  If they do have rehersal at hall, parents are welcome to see.  Check with your son again.
