Can you tell me more about Dulwich's school life? It seems that not so many parents talk about it. I only know that it is a very high rank school in the uk.

Of course NOT! Dulwich is the least recognised and prestigious among these four! I would rank in this way: Eton > Winchester > Harrow > Dulwich.

I can only say, Dulwich (and Harrow) are businesses, but Eton and Winchester are really solid names of what a SCHOOL is. If you are interested in sending your son to Dulwich, be prepared for him returning home to tell you how much fun he has had in the school Mahjong Club and expect no change in his communication in Cantonese with you since he would just continue to speak and live in the mindset of a Hong Kong environment everyday there.

It's really shocking to hear a prestigious school offering such a kind of learning environment for its students! Yes, I'm planning to send my son to England and would like to collect more info.  I understand they are all esteemed school that there are no easy entries so earlier preparation is needed.

You can take note on the rankings of schools: they do make a quite significant difference.Based on the latest A-Level results, the schools that you have listed above have the following ranks:

WinColl (7)
Harrow (39)
Eton (13)
Dulwich (57)

However, I must be frank here that it is no easy task to get in these prestigious schools...it is amazing how many people can afford to pay tens of thousands a month to send their children overseas. Some schools also only take one student from Hong Kong each year...that was my case in one application when I lost my place to a DGS top-achieving girl.

Thanks for your info. Just now I visited the website of Dulwich and discovered that the school has really been opening branches in a lot of big cities, including shanghai, Beijing and suzhou ...

I would go for Eton or Winchester. Both are traditional elite schools. Their students have a good chance of entering the best universities like Oxford and Cambridge. A friend of mind went to Winchester. She is a shy and quiet girl, but she go admitted into Oxford University.

However, getting into Eton is just not easy...to get into Eton is just as difficult as to get into Harvard in fact. Combining the rumours and legends with its ambiguous listed requirements, one would have the idea that getting into Eton is no ordinary thing.

I know someone who is now with Eton. The boy was a very average kid, Not particularly good at sports or music either. The only thing I can think of that got him into Eton was probably his (family's) strong connections with mainland officials.

Good to hear more about Eton. Does anyone have info about other schools of the top notch in the UK. What I have put down probably are all 'dream schools' for Hong Kong kids!

You must be mistaken.
Your shy & quiet girl must have attended St Swithun's which is a girls school in Winchester, rather than Winchester College which is a boy school.

Babybo, if you are looking for top boys school, you should also consider Westminster, which has the highest Oxbridge success rate (>50% every year) of all the schools in the UK!

I don't know if I am really a paranoid parent who wants to send away my boy after knowing the recent changes I saw in many primary schools.  P.4 and P.5 parents' topic now is when to send their kids away.  The way they 'fought' a place for their kids in a local reputable school a few years ago can still be vividly recalled.  Today they are worrying about the whereabouts of their kids overseas' studies.  Do all of you think parents in Hong Kong are really miserable?

Sorry, got mixed up. The school my friend went to was Westminster School. She entered at 6th form.

Sadly, they only accept one Hong Kong student per year and the student must comply with their strict age requirement, which makes getting in almost impossible. By age requirement, it is as follows:

Child in Hong Kong can only apply to attend Sixth Form at Westminster after completing Form Four in HK.
No exceptions for 'big' kids (Those born in the year before from 1st Sept to 31st Dec)

There is no scholarship or bursary - full fee must be paid. No academic agents in Hong Kong are authorized to apply to the school on behalf of yourself that means you must apply individually. The place for the Hong Kong student went to a DGS girl. I had to fly over (it is compulsory for overseas students to fly over for interview if they pass the written examinations) for a whole day of long interviews for each subject that I wanted to do for my A-Levels but still, even though I got full marks in the Math entrance exam paper, I couldn't get in haha

Are there any real disadvantages for being a "big kid"?  or for the school enrolling "big kids"?

If the "big kids" sit for GCSE and A Level only once, will they be penalized for being "big" when applying for a university place?

Oh, of coz not since some people go through UCAS way past their twenties anyway and the chance is not diminished because of age. I was only talking about the specific school which does not accept 'big child' and of course 'repeaters' very strictly. While most of the students in HK go for Sixth Form in UK after their F5 is completed, this is not allowed for that school since they require students to go after F4 to meet the strict imposed age requirement.
