NIS kindergarten is indeed a good school. My son is studying K3 there. He just joined the school last August. He loves the school much much more than ESF. I think the reasons are:
1. the smaller class size (15 students/class) - each student got teacher's attention. Everybody got a chance to perform on stage to celebrate Christmas. Everybody's name is recognized. Everybody's birthday is celebrated... the whole school sings happy bday song together.
2. the outdoor playground is amazing. You've got to see it for yourself.
3. the everyday morning praise session is one of the children's and parents' favourites. Everybody including teachers, children AND parents sing songs and pray every morning. At times, depending on IPC topics being discussed, professionals are invited to talk to children. Last time, people came in to show different animals to the children. Parents were also invited to introduce their jobs.
4. Children do have weekly homework assignments (if they cannot finish them in school). The school teaches traditional Chinese characters in Mandarin and the curriculum is around daily life experience. And starting in second term of K3, students started simple but interesting reading comprehension using Oxford Reading Tree series. Students have to write weekly journal (English) as well... very simple, just one or two sentences. For Maths, K3 is now learning subtraction.
5. K3 is a full-day class. Children get to learn to be independent... manage to have lunch, snack, take a nap, and play at recess time.
6. No Cantonese is allowed in school. I once talked in Cantonese in school and a kid said to me "English, please." Children communicate in English to one another even outside school. |
