I dont recall that in Phonology that it specifies your said trash word and treasure word.
But in some articles in internet regarding language learning, there is a game "trash or treasure"
. Not sure if this is what you are looking for. If that's the case, the logic of trash or treasure is quite simple.
Just combine different phonemes, if it can make a word
, then put into your treasure chest. if it cant make a word, put into trash.
if this is not the one you are looking for, hm... other than trash word, treasure word, phonemes, any keywords / clue in your son's home learning info?
