Let's talk about RWI to make this thread more informative. As I understand, RWI is basically a phonics course that puts knowledge into practice right after they were learned. It does not start from A to Z, but may pick out e.g. H, A, T to teach in a group in order to let the kids blending them into meaningful words. They get a feeling of success by able to blend and read the story just taught. The kids have to do a kind of dictation during each lesson, the teacher writes some words on the board, then rubbed out bit by bit and asks them to dictate on their notebooks. The kids also do writing (at least for green books and up), they write simple sentences around the story they just learned.
Overall I think RWI (among others) is effective from my experience.
