I went to the high school section of HKA so I can't comment much on the teachers in the early childhood section. But when I was self-studying in the library, I often saw kindergarten classes coming in with their homeroom teachers for story-telling sessions. The teachers seemed very patient and the kids were very involved. For middle and high school sections, most teachers (esp. those teaching the IB diploma) are very experienced and well-qualified. But then of course, there are teachers who are better and those who are less good in all schools. In general, the teachers are really good though.
As for the environment, that's actually the thing I like most about HKA. They have an extremely friendly environment. Since it's a rather small school, the principals know everyone by name. Before I went to HKA, I lived abroad and went to another bigger IS in HK. With that many people, the relationships between everyone just weren't as strong and I swear my previous principals definitely didn't know my name. So I was quite amazed that the high school principal already knew my name when I attended the Open House before I even applied! HKA stresses a lot on community effort. Most parents are very willing to help and are very involved in school-related activities. All in all, it just creates a very friendly and helping environment for every member of the school.
It's hard to define whether or not it's a "top ranking school". I guess if you're referring to "fame", HKA wouldn't be one of the most well-known international schools in Hong Kong. To me, HKA is more like a hidden treasure (it's more "hidden" before, but now more and more people apply) 'cause it's probably the most or at least one of the most "international" international schools in HK.
P.S. I think they have Open House every month but you need to book first.
