Honestly I think either way is fine, as long as the learner is comfortable.  It is never too difficult to switch, be it Traditional to Simplified or vice versa.  I agree wholeheartedly that Traditional Chinese is more meaningful and the characters are beautiful.  However personally I think it might be easier for children to pick up from Simplified Chinee, especially if there is an option of both English and Chinese, they might have a tendency to take the easy way out and become resistant to learn a truly difficult language like Chinese.  Just my 2-cent thought.

In my opinion, I think kids should learn Traditional Chinese at the beginning. First, traditional Chinese(TC) is the origin of our language. Second, TC is more meaningful since the words are created by its meaning. Third, TC is more difficult to learn. So if our kids learn the difficult one first, it is easier to switch to the simple one (simplified chinese-SC). However, I think kids should also learn Pinyin because they can use this method to input Chinese characters.

I grew up learning TC and learned how to read and write SC when I was in high school and college. I did not have any problem switching between these two types of characters.

wow... what a nice discussion here. I make myself as an example... I born and live in Hk, I can read ...

I happened to come across this old post and find this chat interesting.  I am a Singaporean who was born and grew up in Singapore.  I learnt Simplified Chinese since young.  Honestly I cannot write all Traditional Chinese characters but is able read without difficulties.  Traditional Chinese characters are more meaningful and thus easier to remember and understand.  I have to point out that in Singapore education, English is our first language, and we only learnt Chinese in the one Chinese lesson daily, so maybe it is not on a fair basis to compare the Chinese standard of a Singaporean and a HK citizen of the same generation.  It might be a different story if the same question is popped to someone from Mainland China.

Dear Michellebaby, mingming yinyin and all,

yes, will thinkthink ... but if we put 繁簡體 aside, ma ...

wow... what a nice discussion here. I make myself as an example... I born and live in Hk, I can read & write 繁體 very well just like everyone here ( just that I cannot type chinese ,mthat why I write in english now). I tried to learn 簡體 when I have chance in daily life, at the end  I think I can read it 60%. For those 簡體even I can read, but I cannot write indepently too. Are this applied to you guys  ? I am thinking  may this senerio applied to " 簡體 -->  繁體 " ?.........

hey, do you think simplified Chinese is the trend ? especially when reach our kids ' s generation ?  ...
