When talent students aim to apply extreme competitive course (like medicine or dentistry), they will try to impress admission officer by their extreme outstanding performance in sport, ECA or academic. That is why some students will do 5, even 6 A-levels to impress the admission officer for conditional offer, although in the end majority of conditional offers are only standard requirement of A*A*A to AAA (in uk). You can see from the attached image which indicate the university distinction of a very top UK sixth form college, some students did and achieved 5 A* 1A!
This also tells you that doing basic 3 A-Levels is sometime disadvantage when talking about applying very competitive course at very top university.
