Re: Wembley (Taikoo Shing) 有沒有媽媽認識?

it's only in English, and you need to apply for international primary school.

Re: Wembley (Taikoo Shing) 有沒有媽媽認識?

Hi alicetang,

Thanks for your info.   How do you feel about this school?  Is Jean Afford (the Principle) a good teacher / principle?  Did your child find the program interesting and fun?  I paid a visit there earlier, inside deco is quite old and dull, but I don't mind as long as they keep it clean and tidy.  But I concern about the program, seems that they run this school in a old-fasioned way.

Re: Wembley (Taikoo Shing) 有沒有媽媽認識?

Jean Afford loves the kids very much.  I believe she is a good teacher.

I believe most of the kids enjoy the school activities in Wembley.  One time, I went to the school while it was time for the kids to go to the washroom.  I can see from the back that every child was going in a half bouncing half dancing way.  None of them were purely walking.  They really looked very happy.

I do not know exactly the true meaning of "old fashioned" you mentioned.  I agree that it is old fashioned in the way that it starts teaching writing in K1. My girl (now ~3.5 yrs old) was in the K1 class last year.  I took it as Playgroup for her. She is switched to K1 in another Kindergarten with major language in Cantonese in Sept this year.  It surprised me very much last week that she wrote the word "flower" by herself enjoyingly after my discussion with her about a planting program in her new kinder.  As her new kinder does not teach writing in K1, she apparently learned the word from Wembley.  She had also learned some Chinese such as 春天, 車 (not able to write by herself yet)... as there is an optional Chinese session in Wembley.  I believe Wembley is able to encourage kids to write in an enjoyable way.  My girl will habitually take out the copy book I bought for her and practice writing.  She took it as part of her fun play.

However, the school campus is not that appealing.  It somehow will limit the school activities.  Additionally, as English is the major spoken language, it is only suitable for parents consider putting thier child in international Primary Schools such as ESF, Chinese International School, etc.

Re: Wembley (Taikoo Shing) 有沒有媽媽認識?

Dear Chuchumui,

Your reply means a lot to me as I'm keep thinking about this school in the past 2 weeks.  It is very difficult to find someone who can share with me such a detailed info and comments.  I have more confident on this school now.

Yes, I feel that Jean is very good.  She emphasised that if I wanted to apply this school, I have to bring my child with me so to get a feel whether he loves it or not.  So when I and my son (18 months) checked out every room during the visit, I thought that he might be scared as it's not so appealing honestly.  But surprisingly, it seemed that my son was quite okay and was keep giving Jean and another teacher goodbye kisses (he treated it as a greeting).  It's funny!

Jean hasn't provided me the detailed info about the program, e.g. other than learning phonic, what else she will teach/do with the children?  What she just gave me is a 2-page copy; that's why I feel a little bit uneasy as I am not sure what they would do with the children in a 1.5 hours class.  You know Jean doesn't allow parents staying in the class as she stresses that children becomes more indepentent if no parent is present.

If it is a good school and he can learn phonic happily, I love to send my son there.  I always think that if he goes to Vicxxxxx or those campus with a very beautiful deco, I am afraid that he becomes a "picky" person.  Or I should say he is less flexible on different environment.  So I don't mind the campus at all.  Am I right?  Or I am making everything too stragetic. / result-oriented?

Re: Wembley (Taikoo Shing) 有沒有媽媽認識?

Dear Racheltcy,

I am happy that the info is helpful. I remember Ms Jean Afford got a Degree in education in the UK (cannot remember the full name of the degree).  She is very devoted to child education.  She is not focused in advertisement that not much parents aware of this school.  It is in fact a very good natured kinder because of her heart in the kids.  She also cares the earth we live in and against over-exploitation of natural resources due to human greed.  There was once a notice sent to parents giving us a chance to vote our support to protect the harbour  (related to the event happened last year in which a lawyer in HK sued the Govt for continued reclamation of the harbour)

If you don't mind the simple campus, Wembley is not commercial at all and is in fact very humble.  Besides purchasing the school uniform, school bag, school handbook and $100 for Christmas party, I can recall no other major expenses.   I know in Vicxxxx, the graduate banquet alone costs $500 per head (=1500 when Mom+Dad+kid), not to mention the need to make extravagant costume dressing for the kids for some events such as halloween, Christmas, New year etc., plus other donation and expenses throughout the year.

Wembley is environmental friendly.  It will use "rubblish" (such as empty Yakult bottles, empty flour boxes, toilet paper rolls) for the kids to do art work.  My girl has made a bus using a flour box.  I like it as it is creative and, at least, it will not groom up kids to be 大花筒.

About the program, for kids just 2-3 years old, free play is the main theme, it will have writing, phonics, etc.  Wembley has introduced writing much earlier than other kinders.  But you must beware that in Western countries, kids just need to play and explore. As the Wembley headmaster is from UK, it would be similar to other kids programs overseas.  May be it is also because that Wembley is a very tiny kinder that it does not really have the resource to make up the brochure for parents like what ESF has done.  You might need to ask them if you want to know.  I guess what you need is a rundown of how kids spend their day in Wembley.

Re: Wembley (Taikoo Shing) 有沒有媽媽認識?

Hi Chuchumui,

When I was reading your message, I felt that it's my dream school.  The school is simple yet creative.  When all the kinders are thinking how to attract more students in order to survive, Jean doesn't care about / focus on  the advertisement.  I guess that makes me feel a bit strange at the very beginning, because this school is so humble (to use your word) in such a commercial world.  In fact, I am surprise to find a school like that in Taikoo Shing area.  In fact, my son is just 1.5 years old.  I think I will put him in as a playgroup early next year or pre-nursery in next summer.

May I ask you two more questions:  1) Just wonder why you would pick this school for your girl last year when you knew so little about this school?  2) After your girl joined their K1, she spoke English more often and refused to speak Chinese?  If that is the case, she got any communication problem in the Chinese kinder now?  I definately will pick the Chinese kinder, e.g. LLC or SKC

Re: Wembley (Taikoo Shing) 有沒有媽媽認識?

Racheltcy

My son was a student there last year.  He attended Tots class at his age of 1 year 9 mo for one full year. After we moved, my son changed to study another kinder nearby.

In fact Wembley is a good kinder, small & friendly & creative school.  Jean is very nice & so as the Admin staff & the teachers.  I like it becos it is not commercial & their students are from different nationality, ie Japanese, HK, Taiwanese, Indian....

My son learned through play.  There is no books, no homeworks at all.  It surprised me that my son learned Monday to Sunday thru play when he was 2 years old.

I still have the summer & winter uniform & school bag.  If you're interested, pls PM me.

Re: Wembley (Taikoo Shing) 有沒有媽媽認識?

Dear Racheltcy,

Good question.  I didn't asked myself this question before.  As a Normal and Inexperienced mom, I am sure I would not pickWembley after visiting its campus given it does not have any publication for me to understand it more.
I first put my girl in Kingston Int'l School and then Yew Chung, all out of their fame, their description on the website and comments from a friend who have kids there.  But my girl needed to travel from HK East to Kowloon Tong.  The school fees were expensive (for Kingston I can understand since it had very experienced native Mandarin & English teachers and low teacher to student ratio but for Yew Chung, I just could not understand why.. may be we were paying for the good campus)... And then the SARS disaster happened.  I didn't think it is worth for me to keep paying the high fees when the kinders from time to time might suspend classes. Additionally, I thought I need to stay away from Kowloon Tong.  It is the main KCR interchange where my girl might get first hand interaction with people who had just been to the Mainland.  I was rushing for an alternative Playgroup and one of my friends recommended Wembley.  She said his boy had took summer course there and it was a very OK school. By that time I was so desperate that I even worried about Wembley not accepting my girl.

I talked to Jean about my deep concern that my girl didn't talk at the time of interview.  She comforted me that they had a student who not even said a word when she first came but you just couldn't keep her mouth shut after 6 months.

Since my girl had not really talk when she first joined Wembley, that is natural that she keeps on speaking English afterwards. She is now in LLC.  After 2 months there, she apparently catches up quickly and talks in Cantonese too, though not yet very fluent.
Maybe I should share the latest trend of LLC student acceptance (my own view only): it likes to accept kids whose English is very strong - They don't mind if it is a native English speaker.  In fact several of my girl's classmates just could speak English when they first join LLC.  One of them is even a native English speaker as her father is a foreigner.  I believe it is one of the methods to pough up the English standard of their graduates. Seems to me LLC has no doubt about its ability to teach kids Chinese.  But if it keeps on having both AM and PM classes and not able to run full-time kinder program due to various limiations, there are very little it could add on within the 3 hours program (9:00am-12:00noon or ~1:00~4:00PM).  So it knows accepting kids whose family could provide English environment could well supplement the current LLC program which is Chinese focused.
If LLC does not worry about accepting K1 kids who were not able to speak Chinese, I should not get worried.  My girl will stay in LLC for 3 years.  I am sure she will pick up Chinese there.
The English foundation has help my girl to get into LLC.  And in LLC she will then pick up Chinese.  That is why I once said before that I had made a good decision -- all out of luck.

Re: Wembley (Taikoo Shing) 有沒有媽媽認識?

Dear Ryamna,

Thanks for your encouraging message.  My husband doesn't agree with me to send my son to the English pre-nursery because he prefers Chinese as the mother language.  He thinks that I really confuse our son, especially he doesn't speak a proper word at his 1.5 years now.  I feel so much pressure when I am making the decision because it is a big step that will affect his language development.  But I know that my husband appreciates very much the simple style of this campus.  Also thanks for your offer, I will PM you if I need it.

Dear ChuChuMui,

It's a long story behind!  SARS really changed many people life.  I was just about to deliver my baby during SARS period, I still could remember the fears on everyone's faces in every corner.

Surely you make a right decision.  Your girl is also lucky to study in LLC.  Friends of mine from the church sent their children to LLC too.  When I am watching their kids, I can tell LLC is a very good school.  I meet their children every Sunday, they are from different families but shared the same quality -- happy, polite, proactive, confident, everything you want to discover from a great kid.  I hope my son can get in too!

Re: Wembley (Taikoo Shing) 有沒有媽媽認識?

Racheltcy,

It's OK.  I guess it is just a matter of time.
I am still keeping my girl in Wembley nowadays to keep her English.  It is a long road.  Take it easy.
Genn Doman said no one on earth knows better than the mom what is best for her kids.
With all the best!
