Re: hearing impairments

Chubima,
I'm a teacher for deaf children. The centre I worked in is aimed at teaching children to learn how to talk and listen. There were many successful cases!

Thanks for your reply.  May I know which centre are you teaching in.  My boy have hearing impairement with 60-70.  He talks without any hearing aid until this month, but not as fluent as other kids.

Thanks

Re: hearing impairments

Hi chubima,

I worked with hearing impaired children previously, so I hope my information can help a bit here.

If your boy has an average of 60-70dB HI, he can probably get loud speech or speech nearby. However, with soft speech and speech in a distance, he needs his hearing aids to help. It's good to build up a habit from now on to wear hearing aids, as he will need them in a classroom situation in the future. Think of having hearing aids like others having a pair of spectacles, both are assistive in nature.

Hope that helps.

Re: hearing impairments

Dear Shiba-Inu

Thank you very much for your reply. I'm actually facing what you have said, short distance, no problem at all, a bit long distance, feel difficult to hear.  I've been cheating myself for years that no hearing aid is also ok for my kid (I feel so hard to accept it!).  Few days ago, I go to Widex to see if there is a most advance, "hidden" hearing aid (not like the one provide by EMB), however, I found Widex is kind of "Commercial".  Shiba-Inu, would you please tell me more about this (which one or which model is the best) Thank you very much!

Re: hearing impairments

Hi chubima,

How old is your son now? If he is not yet attending primary school, the behind-the-ear model (like the one provided by EMB) is more suitable for him for the time being. You may click below to get more info:

Hearing aids choices (Click here)

I understand that it's hard for you to accept the fact that your son needs hearing aids and you want to get him a smaller pair. However, it is important now to build up a habit of using it, no matter how big or how small the size is. As I have mentioned previously, view it as assistive device (it is!) like the spectacles. If u know that it is good for your son, u will feel confident about putting it on. Your attitude is "catching" and will be reflected in your son.

In the future, when his ear has grown to a bigger size, you can then try to see if the In-the-ear hearing aids would be suitable to him then.

While it is a different issue whether a hearing aid has more "advanced" technology inside. The most "advanced" hearing aids are the fully digital ones. Most of the private hearing aids companies carry one brand or the other of this tehnology nowadays.

There are quite a no. of private companies out there, try searching the Yahoo HK web by typing the word "hearing test in Hong Kong" or "助聽器". Then u may want to call them/ visit them to see if they are good with fitting hearing aids with children. Different companies have different styles, u may want to find one that is most suitable for u and your son.
