Most Grammer schools have catchment areas so you need to check the catchment areas of your preference schools. You can visit the 11+ Website forum, that will give you more info of the schools and entrance tests.
Grammar School Boardering is not limited to catchment but very few top grammar schools have boarding, especially girl grammar schools which are very rare.
Competition are very high especially amongst the top ones so your child does need extra studying and preparation.
You can look at the GCSE and ALevel rankings to give you an idea of the grammar schools academic performances to give you the idea of the top ones.
