I think communicating in mother tongue is very important as the parents' language(s) is/are native. I have friends who is native in Cantonese and whose hubby is native in Putonghua. Their children communicate with each of them in their own mother tongue fluently, nearly bilingual. Of course if you really want to communicate with them in English as well, it is better to ask yourself if that is the English level you expect on them, likewise for relying on maid. From my experience, I always need to correct the pronounication and gramma errors made by my Philipino maid as I don't want my children to pick up those errors. Teaching children right in the first instance is so important and quick. However, correcting their errors is such a pain and longer process. |
