Is it too late for my son to start studying at Int'l School after P.6 in a local

Please help.  I have been reading the threads under INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL.  However, I really have no clue on the requirements and whether I should give consideration for my son to start from primiary school or high school at an International School.

I wish my son to learn more Chinese from primiary school and then start to study at Int'l School for high school.

Would my plan work like this in Hong Kong?

Heard that the demand of year 7 (F.1) of International School has increased a lot these years as no. of international primary schools/classes have increased but there are not enough international secondary classes.  Phoenix to be opened by September 06 in the new name of Yat Sun School will have a lot more seats to accomodate the increasing demand into secondary.

Besides, Yew Chung will have new secondary school at Kowloon Tong by September 06 as well.

Afterall, the English assessment test into secondary will be much more demanding than that of primary, so may be more difficult for local school students to pass the test.

Never too late!
My friend's daughter started to study in Int'l school since Form 1. At first, she spent much effort to catch up English. Finally, she completed her middle school life happily & sucessfully at the Int'l school.
Now, she has just completed the middle school. And she succesfully got the scholarship to study oversea, and she has another choice - study in HK Poly U.

Would you mind telling us which IS your friend's daughter entered?  For some IS, it may be easier to join by F.1 as they have ESL to help the kids to catch up with their English.

I know a boy who joined Phoenix by F.1 a few years ago, he also needs a lot of time to catch up with the English standard.  It was easier to join by F.1 in the past as the demand for IS secondary is less, not sure if this is the case in the near future.

Heard from principal of Phoenix that they may not take local school kids to F.1 as the gap in English standard is too large.  Also know that some local school kids are accepted into ESF's middle primary but they are required to repeat one year, e.g. join P.4 instead of P.5 to allow them to take a year to adapt.  There is no ESL aids in ESF.

I think Yew Chung is a good choice for transition, I know a few successful cases transferring from local school to Yew Chung at F.1, the children seemed to settle well.

wow, thanks for your advice from all of you.  it is very helpful for me to learn more.  i will check yew chung and phoniex more sin.

BTW, one more question, do we need to move to live in the particular area in order to attend such IS??

Sorry I ask just too much, cos I really have no clule. Many thanks again.

As far as I know, only ESF schools are assigned according to catchment areas.  All other IS won't have such restriction.

Thanks your response, but could you enlighten me a bit more on what the ESF schools could provide with for our kids?  does it mean, only these schools accept enrollment of kids from local school to IS?

Lorry,

There are tons of discussions in BK regarding ESF schools, and you can get a lot of their info. from their websites.  Basically as discussed in other threads of discussions re ESF, they have priorities for English speaking only kids, and give the lowest priorities to local school kids.  

Seems that you don't understand catchment areas??  It means that you can only apply the ESF schools according to their zoning rules.  You can get the details from their website.

WYmom, thanks your quick response.  Sorry that i asked so many questions.  I will study the INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL forum and the threads therein for more information.  Just that i am kinda in a hurry to learn more but with very little time myself during the day for the computer.  that's why i have been asking so many which the questions are already in other threads.  I will check them out myself later.  thanks again for your assistance.
