It has nothing to do with phonics.
Nothing to do with A E I O U. You have to look at the IPA of the letter.

The one use 'an' is:

A, E, F, H, I, L, M, N, O, R, S, X

謝謝淑筠媽咪及davis,

其實, 你地兩位都知道我嚮度諗緊咩... 話明借題發揮, 其實我就是想一談phonics及phonetics的不同.

淑筠媽咪特意寫出一直我們一代由小學至中學所教的文法規律...aeiou是響音(vowels), 凡以這字為首的英文名詞(vocabularies), 前面的article要用"an". 淑筠媽咪, 謝謝你.

phonics也是一些音節規律去推測一個英文字的串法. 我沒有正式上過, 所以也不便多言.

phonetics是語音學, 是純粹根據一個英文字的慣常讀法, 以語音符號去表達出來---就是字典上的"鬼畫符". 小朋友比較難掌握的.

至於davis所說的IPA, 就是國際語音系統(International Phonetics A??), 謝謝你, davis.

為何AEFHILMNORSX要用an, 但U卻要用a呢?

我唔識嚮電腦打語音音標, 只好用近似英文打...

E-i (注意E的正確讀法, 不是yi)

唔洗客氣. 淑筠媽咪

補充少少... 這就是為甚麼以前d英文老師話aeiou用an時, 亦有好多例外. 其實, 若用phonetics去apply呢條rule, 係唔會有例外架. 只係, 若純以英文串法去apply呢條rule, 就個頭有幾大都裝唔哂d例外...
