Reported by Education post of South China Morning Post, Saturday, June 11, 2005.

"The English Schools Foundation aims to have daily Chinese classes in all its primary schools by 2007 in a major overhaul of the subject."

Just wonder if all ESF primary also have daily Chinese, Phoenix as an ESF private school will have not much advantage over them, but her school fee is much higher ($65000 p.a. for primary since 2006).  If then, will ESF increase the school fees of its primary gradually to be same as Phoenix?  I think this is quite possible as the govt will gradually cut the subsidy to ESF.

Hi WYmom,

I don't think that the change of Chinese curriculum is related to the subvention or the school fee.  Eventhough the legislators have accused the ESF for poor management, no one has agreed to cut the subvention.  Our going-to-be CE, Donald Tsang, said "First focus on the reform then talk about subvention."  In the worst senario, the students now studying in ESF's schools may not be affected.  Usually new policy only affect new comers.

Don't be too pessimistic. Cheer up.

Since they are drafting the new Chinese Curriculum, more information will be disclosed later.  You may buy the South China Mornig Post every Saturday, inside you will find the Education Post.  You may subscribe the on-line version www.scmp.com at HK$399/year. You will find lot of information about IS in Hong Kong.

Seems that you are familiar with Chinese, not sure if you are local Chinese.  Do you feel big cultural difference in ESF?  I believe in primary all kids are quite OK, but in secondary schools, heard that there are also drug problems as the discipline in ESF schools is quite loose.  Do you know if this is the case?

Don't be disappointed WYmom and Garon.  Because of copy right, I cannot post the whole article in this forum.  According to SCMP, the action plan also aims to develop the Chinese curriculum at secondary level.

Actually, BHS also teaching the simplify chinese from P2. My son studying in P4 now, he has some chinese homeworks in each month. Some text papers for writing and make sentences. He also can speak simple putonghua likes : I'm hungry / I'm hot or cold / I need your help / I hate xxxxxxx......
