The school usually separate PTH lesson and Chinese lesson (some use cantonese and some use PTH for teaching Chinese).
Which subject your son feel difficult, PTH class or Chinese class (using Cantonese of PTH as medium of instruction)?
I know some kids may have difficulties learning Chinese using PTH, some teachers may accommodate that. Usually PTH lessons are easier to handle than Chinese lessons (if teach in PTH), Chinese lesson has more learning expectations for students, thus some students, especailly in P1, quite difficult to adjust if they are not coming from PTH speaking families or coming from kider without PTH training.
For those schools really care about diversities of children, they will give time for P1 to adjust to the language environment......e.g. P1 use Cantonese, then P2 -P6 use PTH in teaching Chinese.
If you really find it difficult, talk to other parents in your school seeing how they handle this issue, or talk teachers if they are helpful or really care about diversities among children. If they don't care or if the school is not really helpful, find a helpful school that best fit your child's need.
Meaningless to communicate with schools without any genuine wish to accommodate diversities among children. They will not care about your specific kid, but the general goals of school.
