Dear Parents,
Hopefully, by now you have all had a chance to read and digest the English Newsletter that was recently issued, outlining the various reading initiatives that will be going on this school year.
I want to take this opportunity to add some further details about the English Reading Diaries that your children will be receiving soon. Each student will get a reading diary for the first two semesters. It should be kept at home. Your children will be asked to record the title of the books they have read, as well as developing their own dictionaries, summarizing their favourite story and focusing upon developing good reading habits.
We would like parents to become active partners in this initiative. You should only sign your child’s diary if s/he has demonstrated an understanding of the text. Therefore, we need you to briefly review your child’s reading. This ought to be a short process lasting no more than five minutes.
Please ask your children to do some of these things each time they have read a book:
*retell the story
*talk about the characters
*ask them about the parts which they enjoyed or disliked
*ask a few ‘wh’ questions, such as
- Which character did you like best? Why?
- What did you learn from the story?
- Why do you think _______ happened?
- Where/When was the story set?
- Who would you recommend this story to? Why?
Whilst, it’s important that children can show some general understanding of the story, we don’t them to know every word. The principle aim of this scheme is to develop a love of reading and to make it a habit.
I hope that the programme is a success. Thanks, in advance, for your support.
Regards
Mr. Martin Kennard: English Panel Head |
