Hi, nice to talk to other parents here..

My daughter is not very sensitive to readings, not as my son, who read a lots of books and newspapers with his own initiatives.

So I have to try extra effort to arouse my daughter's interest in reading. She like princess stories, I read those stories with her, the simple one and ask her to read the stories by herself. One week one book, start from general reading, to detailed reading. I use the story book with bilingual ones, so she will get to know both languages at the same time.

If your kid loves reading with his own initiatives, no need to do so, just put magazine and newspapers at home and bring them to the libraries, they will "eat" all the books themselves...

There will be a talk on 24/9 about the changes.  I'll attend to learn more. As far as I know, IB PYP has no exams. There will only be continuous assignments and assessments. I only worry if the teaches are already well trianed to teach the curriculum in IB framework.

Can we share what the kids learn in schools?

My daughter at 1A5:

1) Chinese lesson- one teacher teaches Chinese and Mandarin, in Mandarin language. She read the books in Mandarin, learning to write and play card games in mandarin.

homework - she have chinese homework every day, for reading or writing or both. She bring home the play cards with Mandarin phonics and we can play at home, following the teaching plan of the teacher.

Comments:
I found it very good system for learning Chinese in terms of good foundation in phonics and volals
and readings... I like the ways they teach the Chinese language, very systematic and follow the needs of children. My girl learn it and be able to read and write.

2) English lesson - two teachers sometimes, one teacher some times, the child was not able to describe the system of English learning.

They do some writing, but what I concern is that they watch movies everyday (I think the Iceage), and since the kid was not able to describe fully about what she has learned, it is very difficult to understand the teaching methods and curriculum system by now.

no homework, I hope she can get a little bit homework in English everyday.., hopefully it will be done in the coming weeks.

3) Maths - teaching the basics and homework at home as well..

Pretty impressive about the presentation of Mrs So on IB curriculum.

They recognize their limiations (that's a good sign), and I appreciate their comparison of the existing local curriculum from EDB and  the IB curriculum, most of the long term goals are almost the same. The strategies of learning will be different, and the training of staff will be different..and the resources input will be different..

I assume the learning outcome will be different. However, as this is the initial start, still need to wait and see. I believe the teachers' quality and exposures to IB curriculum is the crucial point and see how the school is determined to get into the philosophy and to input resources to train the teachers or to hire teachers with such a good background!!

I believe any interactive learning mode all depends on teachers' philosophy and training background, without good trained teachers, all are paper works!!

i found that their teaching method is very similar to ESF or any other internationals.   Still need to know what will the kid learn at school.

some of the DSS may follow some of the strategies, but not that systematic and the teachers seem not very ready or comfortable to do the interactive learning!! I learned from DSS ed reports that the schools try to be interactive and student-led, but the teachers seem to be less competent to carry out this kind of teaching and learning in class.

so, the most important concern I have is the quality of teachers and their opportunities of being trained and their attitudes of "buying" this kind of student-centred learning or not...Even with the opportunities of training, some of the teachers may not get the essence of IB philosophy.

It's important that the school gets the resources to attract good and qualified and well-trained teachers to make the school to run the IB in a successful way. so the management team and leadership of the school also counts important rating!!

IC...you are such a knowlegeable mother!!!     Very nice meeting you in here!!!    Yesterday i found my son got 2 math's tests result for me to sign.  Only 20 questions, very easy test, but need to complete in 5 mins.  That's really good at least the teachers will give this kind of review with the kids.

just learned from the experience and you can find the report about school in EDB website, but I am not sure about CPS's report, because not all schools have completed the reports..

yes, the maths tests have been returned, they learn step by step, to keep a good foundation.
