I posted some sharings about SN under another discussion topic already ... In fact, that post is actually my first post wrote in the SN board.
Why? I saw a few topics in the SN board recently, commenting about the school & teachers etc ... Thus, as the parent of an SN alumni, I just want to share with you on what I feel & what my son had experienced over the last few years in SN.
A couple few more points here about choosing schools for kids:
1) Every school has it's own characteristics, strengths and of course weaknesses as well. One should understand it thru different means first.
For example, when I work on choosing primary school for my son, I even make "site visit" to my desired school at a good time (for example, when student finish the day and leave the school) and observe. And I will also look for opportunity to speak to some parents directly and get their comments about the school.
2) After knowing the school, you will have to ask yourself on what would you like your kids to get from the school. This is important -- Different parents have different expectations on their kids.
For example, my boy is pretty active. He likes to talk and express himself in classes. He likes to get motivation and rewards to learn (rather than being pushed and punished, if he is not doing right). He doesn't like to be bound by those very strict classroom type rules, setting and environment.
With that, I know some of the so called good KGs in Kowloon Tong like to train kids becoming absolutely obedient to teachers in classes. To me, I know pretty clear that this can't fit my son because he will definitely be very unhappy to schooling there.
In short, for KG education, my expectations are:
1) Kids should always be happy to go school -- This is the fundamental basic. If he is not happy and always don't find the place interesting, then how can he manage to interact with people and also learn stuffs there!!
2) School must give opportunities and exposure to the kids to learn things in different areas and aspects. Depth is not the really the key at the KG stage, but width is a must. Thus, I am not very concerning about whether the English teacher's accent isn't very accurate or native. As long as she is responsible and be caring & patient enough to teach kids, plus she can find ways to arouse kids' interesting in learning the subject, then that's already good enough.
3) Learning in a happy environment can definitely allow kids to develop their potentials & talents.
Once the potentials are identified, then communicate to the school and see how school + family can work together in supporting & developing the talents. And in some cases, if school can't really support (due to resources or other adminstrative constraints), then as parents, we can always look for supplements & even alternatives to bridge the gap.
Quitting the school can be one of the alternatives, but I probably will not let my son quit the school, just simply because of the English teachers' accent. I might consider letting my son quit & change school, only if he is always unhappy to go school.
But again, it's really up to individual's values, choice and expectation to determine.
Anyway, I am lucky enough that my son is in a pretty good primary school now in Kowloon Tong. I use the word "lucky" because to some extent, it's really the truth.
Think about it -- For good primary school, there are always over 2000 applications received, but with only 100+ seats offered each yr. And parents nowadays all know well on how to "upgrading" & "selling" their kids to the school.
So, apart from good preparations, luck is really there. In fact, more and more schools now cares more about the kid's interview performance rather than simply looking at school report cards, reference letters and profile.
If your kid is a keen & enthuastic learner, then the chance of getting into a good primary will definitely be higher.
Hope my sharing helps!! Anyway, wish you all good luck and enjoy the few years KG honeymoon with your kids!!
Primary life will be totally different ...
