I have seen many students come interview who are about 5 years old, and they tell me they are playing Grade 5 piano. I ask them to perform, I have yet to see one who plays at that age, at that grade with all the foundation, skills, strength, and maturity necessary for that grade.
There is NO short cut in music learning.
Grade 5 at 5 years old, a lot is missing.
For one, the child must have MISSED out many masterpieces and must learned pieces for that grade.
Also, sight reading will be a weakness.
I have these students who come to me, and then we end up starting from Grade 1 all over, even some basic techniques and knowledge from the 1st lessons, I will go over again.
Then after half a year of filling in the "holes", the child can then progress onto the "real enjoyment" of playing. Some takes longer than others, but what is the HURRY???? |
