A young mom brought her daughter, a K1 girl ranked first in her kindergarten, to our center and registered for phonics courses. The mommy was most concerned about her education and asked detailed questions on how to revise at home.

Her girl had delicate skin and intelligent eyes. It turned out that she had already mastered all single sounds and built a sound foundation in English. Although she hadn’t learnt digraphs and blending, her comprehension and oral skills were advanced compared with her peers.

But we know that she shouldn't be happy staying where she was; she could go much faster! We have lots of students who come first in their day schools, and from our previous experience, these high flyers excel with our phonics training and tailor-made teaching approach. They are a few years more advanced than those without proper phonics training.

My kid is 8 years old and will be promote to P.3 after summer holidays. Is it too late for her to learn phonics. In fact I want her to improve her reading and writing skills.

Dear bkmum2005,

It is not too late for a P3 student to learn phonics. However, if students fail to develop a functional grasp of phonics by then, it will be very difficult to learn English efficiently as the difficulty level of school materials increases.

Phonics will save the students' struggle with sound to word relationships. It will help them to become a better reader and speller, and eventually, a better writer.
