Sorry for the late reply. I think an accompaist could be helpful if :-
1. the candidate feels more relaxed to have someone familiar with him in the audition; and
2. the accompanist is professional enough to assist the candidate to sing better (e.g. providing clear tempo, hints on change of mood and expression, hiding the candidate's weakness and showing off his strength).
Otherwise, there should not be any difference in having an accompanist or not. The teacher could be looking for qualities like a good voice and musical sense.
