Please suggest good secondary schools in Australia for boys.  Boarding school and home-stay, which one is better?
Please give me opinions!

我幫我小朋友搵學校時考慮過以下几間
1. All Saints Anglican School (有boarding), Gold Coast
2. The Cathedral School (有boarding), Queensland
3. Prince Alfred College (男校_有boarding), Adela ...

Dear vic.pretty,

Thank you very much for your information.

My son will be in Form 3 this September.  In fact, I don't know where to send him.  I had the idea to send him to Australia a few months ago but he was not willing to do so until this month.  So I haven't collected much information about education in Australia yet.

Originally, I think he can go in Feb, 2008.  But now I know it is too hurried so I think I'll let him go after he completes Form 3 and he agrees.  I don't know which territory is better or more suitable for him.  He has the ability to study but he is very simple-minded, playful and easily affected by others.  So I think maybe it is better to send him to a 校風好 school with fewer Hong Kong people.  Do you have any suggestions?  Can other parents also give me your valuable experiences?  Thanks a lot!!!

Hi pianoma,

I live in Brisbane and have heard that Brisbane Boys' College ... click here , Brisbane Grammar School ... click here ,and St. Joseph's Nudgee College ... click here are very good.

Brisbane might be a good choice for your son as life here is pretty simple (or boring as others will say).

virgokaren,

Brisbane - private girls schools
All Hallows' School ... click
Brisbane Girls Grammar School ... click
Clayfield College ... click
St. Margaret's Anglican Girls School ... click
Somerville House ... click

Gold Coast - private girls school
St. Hilda's School ... click

Gold Coast - private co-educational school
All Saints Anglican School ... click

State schools follow the "local catchment area" policy in accepting students, that is, you have to provide proof that you live within the local catchment area.  I've heard that some state schools do accept overseas students but I don't know which ones.  However, good state schools are in such great demand that I don't think they will have vacancy for overseas students.  Perhaps you can check with the agents on this.

virgokaren,

Private or public school ... it's a personal choice.  There are good public schools and there are terrible private schools.  My husband is an Aussie and he believes in the public school system and so we will be sending our son to a public school (though he's only 19 months now ).

Generally speaking, if it is a good suburb, the public school there will be a good one.  I don't mean it guarantees good academic results but 校風同學習環境 will be better.

Brisbane SH is VERY GOOD
Kelvin Grove, Kenmore and The Gap are good suburbs
Mt. Gravatt, Sunnybank and Rochedale are the southern suburbs where there are a lot of Chinese living there.  If you prefer your daughter to mingle with more English speaking school friends, then stay away from these 3.

I'm afraid I don't know anything about the schools in the other regions.

Brisbane ? And Do u think Brisbane is a good place for
overseas students? (I mean the weather, living and study
envoirnment, etc.)

Thanks again.

virgokaren,

Yes, there are quite a lot of HK Chinese living in Brisbane (though not as much as in Sydney and Melbourne).

Some people will say that schools are academically better in New South Wales and Victoria.  Frankly, I don't know enough to agree or disagree with this statement.

So education standards aside, personally, I think Queensland, or Brisbane in particular, is an ideal place for study.  Brisbane's lifestyle is layback and simple and is not as cosmopolitan as Sydney and Melbourne, and hence, less attractions to distract the kid.

My niece is now studying in University of Queensland and one of the reasons why my brother chose Brisbane instead of Sydney was because a good friend of his, who has lived in Sydney for over 10 years, told him that a lot of overseas students like to spend their free time in the casinos.

Safety wise, Brisbane is quite good.  People here are generally friendlier and more helpful too.

Weather wise, it's pretty nice all year round and that's why we're called the Sunshine State.  The weather is not as extreme as in Sydney and Melbourne.

virgokaren,

Thanks ... Devlin just turned 19 months, no longer my little baby    I speak to him in Cantonese.  He doesn't seem to have any problem understanding Cantonese and English but, like all bilingual babies, he's a bit slow in learning to speak, still babbles a lot.

Devlin媽媽

as my son is studying at IS at HK and we plan to let him to study at Australia later on.

I would like to ask about the immgration system.  As some of my friends told us if we apply to immgrate to Austrialia, even we got the permit only (that means we did not finishes the requested stay period)  Our son/girl can go to Australia study at public school and paid the local school fee instead of overseas student's school fee.  Is that true?

i'm doubt of it.

lamsuetwai,

after you and your family member got PR, your childs can study in public school by paying local school fee, not a overseas student fee.  How old is your son? You may need to study with them if your son still little because most public school without boarding house.
