I think it all depend on the teaching style and character of the teacher, if one is flexible and open, this is no harm to negotiate the marks with them, vice versa, one is traditional and book-style type, any answer beyond the model answer will not get any mark at all.
I quite like the sample given on the Chinese sentence re-structuring, I think this is about mindset,
1) No completion of homework, no TV watching; or
2) No TV watching, no completion of homework
it sounds familiar to many families, probably the teacher has higher moral standard, pain before relax, mindset issue.
Convinced to do things differently might not always leads to success as one might feel being challenged.
