how to apply for such courses?
It depends on which course you are referring to. If you are talking about EPGY through infokids, then just go onto their wbsite www.infokids.com.hk and see if any of the courses really interest your child. Then call them up and ask what to do for an application. Actually you can download an application from their website, fill it out, and send back the application with your child's academic report. If you are applying for English writing, you have to submit 2 English graded compositions of your child's within the last 6 months.
If you are applying for mathematics, only submit the academic report with the application form. Need also a cheque for the assessment. I forgot how much it is already, I think it's $280. Then if everything is ok, that means, if your child's standard means their standard, then you will get a call telling you when to bring your child for an assessment.
During the same time of the assessment, be sure to sit in the parents' info section. Mr Tsui of the center (infokids) will tell you info of the EPGY program (from Stanford U.) and many more and what your child can do to keep up and so on.
They have classroom courses for Math and IML courses. (IML courses are English but at a lower grade). As for the upper grade English courses, the class will be held on the internet every week. You cannot see the teacher but you can hear her, and before the seesion, infokids will send you a software to be installed onto your computer. This software enables you to log into the classroom for the class.
My son got into the IML courses, and the English courses. I forgot about the IML courses, but each grade of the English writing course runs for 1 year, and each of the individual course from each grade runs about 3 months, so the first of the semester is from Sept to Dec, the second runs from Jan to March, and the last runs from April to Jun.
As for the CTY program from Johns Hopkins U., go to this website:http://cty.jhu.edu/ and also read info and see if there are courses that interest your child. For CTY courses, unless it is a language course, or some AP courses, they are mostly self-paced courses. That means you set your own timetable, no teacher is around. But there is a tutor for you to ask questions if you have any. For any child in primary school, I recommend that the parent (mother or father) has to be there for him/her for the first few sessions, to guide him/her through, and to translate for him/her when needed. Be sure to sit with him/her for the tutorial session also.
For applying CTY courses, simply send an email to them to ask for an assessment. You will have to find a proctor (to guide thru the test) and a test center, then they will send the assessment material to where you have specified.
Hope this helps. |
