I am not from HK, but It seems local families sending their kids to ESF seem to be rich or upper middle families.  Is it so?

I am from Japan.  Yes, I think HK middle class is for Japanese upper middle class.  Many of my kid's friends have European car, paying more than HK$20000 for house rent (we are living in more expensive house, but company pays!!!  I can not pay HKA$20000 in Japan!!!).  Also have the membership for the private club....is this still middle class?  It means upper class in Japan!!!

Maybe the word "RICH" was not the correct word.  In HK, rich means super rich.  So, I think family who is sending kids to ESF are mostly from upper middle class.

I would say 'middle class' and also civil servants as they receive education allowance from government.  Most families nowadays only have one child so this also allows a bit of 余裕。

My daughter also studing in ESF. We are not 'rich', even I don't think we are middle class family. But the truth is we are enjoying the education allowance from the government.(civil service) The salary income isn't high but stable. Less worry to be unemployed.

We are just try to provide a comparatively better learning environment to our child within limited resource.

Just like us, we're unable to buy a flat due to we have to save money for her university. (we are living in the service quarter) You might say, 'that's good to enjoying the housing and education benefit.' But the truth is - we might never have our own flat. I mean in our whole life.

I think the really 'rich' family in HK seems to prefer those 'real' IS. (such as AIS, HKIS...)

Yes that is why I especially included civil servants.  Well who cares if one can buy a flat or not.. Bear in mind before the full mortgage is paid, the flat is not your real asset... it is just a liability i would say.
Education allowance + govt quarters .. wow, you are definitely very lucky!!

Some are rich, some are not.  I just got an email invitation to a birthday party at Repluse Bay and the parents' meeting at Deep Water Bay Country Club.  But some live on Lamma Island too!  These parents are even more exciting and participating.   So, it all depends on the catchment area.  However, it does not matter that much as compared to local elite schools.  The concern is placed more on kids rather than parents' pocket.  At least it does not bother me that much.  To answer your question, it just doesn't matter whether the parent is rich or not as far as ESF concern.

When my kid was in the US.  Some of her classmates were super rich.  But does it matter?  Parents were really getting together and helped each other on behalf of their kids.  If your kid will some day get into one of the ESF school, your background really does not matter.  The only thing that matter is whether you are speaking English all the time to your kids and spending time with your kids on reading.

In Bradbury School (ESF) , over 70% kids are come from Stanley, Repluse Bay & Mid level. So rich or upper middle class, just depend on which ESF school you go.

Dear Glossimar and other parents,

What are your ideas and further observations?
Do you think kids from "better" family background
perform better academically and others? If so, shall we locate/relocate our family to a catchment area so that our kids go to a dream ESF school instead of another?

It seems to be the case.  I heard from a kindergarten teacher from an international school saying that BS is the best.  However, I don't believe it.  (But uniform wise, it is the best!) It all depends on the principal and teachers.  Besides, they measure a child's progress based on his own improvement, not others.  If you do want to follow through, be aware that the competition is very keen.  I met quite a few Caucasians' parents that their children did not even get a chance for the interviews.  (When they found out my child got in, they were really really mad.)  In terms of precentage, over 70% in my child's class can be classified as Caucasians.  This percentage is very high in Hong Kong.  So, the strategy would be first to enter an easier one like Kennedy, a bigger school, then request for an internal transfer.  There are always vacancies available when school starts because of the nature of the parents' jobs.

They will move the ESFK Sheng Wan to the Bradbury campus next year.  It will like the sister school of BS.  So it may be better for those kids since the principal has the first hand knowledge of the kids there.

Hope the information helps!  Good luck and best of hope!
