Go to the website, download the application form.  Fill it out and mail it in with your child's birth certificate, application fee and address verification.  Send the application to the kindergarten of your choice.  There's no catchment area for kindergartens.

It's best to send the application by courier, certified mail or by hand to make sure the application doesn't get lost.

Then wait... it's that simple.

Don't bother sending a portfolio or anything.  ESF goes strictly by Cat 1 then Cat 2 and according to their priorities (as listed on the website) until all places are filled.  When they cannot decide on which child to offer the play visit, they use the computer generated number as they receive the applications to decide.  It's like a lottery.

Basicly, they feel 3 year olds are 3 year olds, there's really nothing they are looking for initially.  Then they will offer a play visit, when they determine whether the child is NOT appropriate for an english-based curriculum.

In other words, if the school offers you a play visit, you are pretty sure that you have either secured a place or on the top of the waiting list.  There's no "interview" like local schools.

Hi, anyone know how does ESF decide whether an applicant is Cat 1 or Cat 2 apart from sth very obvious like whether they have siblings studying in ESF or whether the parents are ESF staff?  Is what passport the kid/partents holding is one key factor?  or solely the first language the kid speaks?

Passport doesn't make that much difference.  Of course they look for the obvious, but some children with siblings in the ESF system are also in Cat 2.

They look at the form first.  Since many parents in recent years lie about their family language on the application form, the school decides to do play visit to confirm the english proficiency.

If parents' first language is cantonese, does it mean that we are belong to Cat 2 and our child will be consider after those Cat 1 (non-cantonese speaker) and Cat 2 (chinese, but english as family language?)... if family language is cantonese, does it mean we have really low chance to get an offer to ESF? thanks.

Cantonese families are in Cat 2, whilst mandarin families are in Cat 1.

Sorry for not agreeing your comment.

My kid is belonged to Cat. 1 and will be in TY from next month .

My kid holds foreign  passport . When we applied, we reported honestly that cantonese is one of the language being used at home.

my kid also hold foreign passport and can speak cantonese as well, she's in cat 2, for other mandarin speaking classmates are in cat 1.  so it's hard to understand how they classify.
