My understanding (https://www.gov.uk/british-natio ... your-family-members) and could be wrong:
"Your family members can apply as your ‘dependant’
A dependant can include your: - husband, wife, civil partner or unmarried partner"
So, I think husband and wife means legally married man and woman.
Definition of partners:
"Partners Partners must be 18 or older to apply as your dependant. They’ll need to prove that they’re either: So, I think partner is not the same as husband and wife.
"Partners and children under 18
Partners and children under 18 do not have to apply at the same time as you. Your visa must still be valid when they apply.
Other family membersOther family members must apply within 2 days of your application."
I think this means only partners can apply later. Husband falls into other family members and must apply within 2 days.
I also found definition of civil partnership:
"civil partnership
- a legally recognized union with rights similar to those of marriage, created originally for same-sex couples in jurisdictions where they were not legally allowed to marry."
