Ability to Read

I actually know a couple who practised three languages with her girl at home (father spoke PTH all the time, mother English and the father's mum Cantonese).  The girl did not speak until 2 and a half when they, upon advice by a professional speechh therapist, gave up such practice.

I have heard that, kids will know how to distinguish differnet languages naturally when he grows up?  Do you think so?

Luckily, the languague deveopment of my kid is so far so good, he speaks a lot.  But just cannot distinguish different languages.  

We taught to him in Mandarin and Cantonese since born.  Starting from 20th month, we start to teach him English.

CherylMum,

I want to know is that you and your husband speak cantonese to your children at home  and they learn english from school. Because I want  my child can speak fluent english. I want to know is it necessary that we have to speak english at home because I want to speak mother tongue to my child as I think more親切 and actually my english is so good. I want to know how other mother they teach their child and share your experience to me.

My view is that if the child's language ability is very high then you may leave the school to train his/her second language.  Yet if it is not the case, it is better to have one family member to speak to the child at home with the second language, read him/her story books and observe his/her progress, maid can also help.

May I know which int'l kinder your daughter attended?

We usually speak English with my son since he was about 2 years old and he's used to interact with us in this language now.  However, I wanted to read him a book in Cantonese last Sat.  But he asked me to read the story over in English.  I was suddenly afraid that he doesn't like to learn Chinese and actually I've planned to put him to a mandarin playgroup to be starting in April.

I'm much impressed by your language training to your daughter as shared in BK before.  Would you mind share when did you first start teach your girl Chinese (by reading books?)?

I am not saying we do not speak Cantonese with my child.  I share your view that mother tongue is very important in early year development.  What I mean is that it is better to have one family member to speak English with him.  For my case, my child speaks 100% Cantonese with my husband, 50/50 Cantonese/English with me and 100% English with my maid.  He never mix up the 2 languages and would never speak a sentence with half English and half Cantonese.  Although he is a bit slow in oral speaking at the beginning, he is progressing well in both language now, and he just feels natural to speak different language when he meets different people.

Dears,

The discussion in this forum impressed me so much!  I learnt a lot from all of you.  My daughter likes listening story and every night she asks me to read the story before sleep.  

She is studying in an international class in nursery.  However, I want her to speak better in English.  Sometimes she mixes with the languages and pronounces not well.  Probably, grandparent speaks to her like this.  How can I improve her spoken English?  Any good class recommended for the spoken English??
